After losing the first three games of their four game series, the Purdue baseball team was looking to redeem itself against Ohio State Sunday afternoon at Lambert Field. The Boilers fell short, losing to the Buckeyes 12-5. Purdue’s overall record dropped to 16-22 on the season and 5-11 in the Big Ten. The Boilers got off to a slow start in the first three innings, collecting only one hit, a harmless single by sophomore Daryl Hallada in the first. Unfortunately for the Boilermakers, Ohio State had nine runs on twelve hits by the bottom of the fourth. The Buckeyes held a 2-0 lead heading into the fourth and sent 11 batters to the plate in the inning, scoring seven runs. The Boilers put fourth a valiant effort in the bottom of the sixth inning with four runs on five hits. Sophomore Chris Walker led off the inning with a single, advanced to third on a double by Hallada and scored on a sacrifice fly by first baseman Mike Rothstein. After designated hitter Bill Bennett singled, left fielder Todd Ellinger doubled, driving home Hallada. Catcher Erik Frei followed with a double that scored Bennett and Ellinger to round out the sixth. Defensively, the Boilers committed three errors. However, senior Robb Ramacher provided fans with an outstanding play, leaping high over the left field wall to rob Buckeye third baseman Matt Middleton of a home run in the seventh inning.
The win was given to the Buckeyes junior pitcher Andy Lee who went eight innings, striking out five and walking only two.
Purdue will host the Butler Bulldogs at Lambert Field on Tuesday.
