FT. MYERS, Fla. – The Ohio State baseball team remained undefeated on it’s spring break trip by defeating Canisius, 10-2 at Terry Park this morning behind the pitching of Eric Thompson (Jr., Fairborn, Ohio). The right hander pitched 7.0 innings of four-hit, one-run, zero-walk ball while striking out eight batters. After a scoreless first inning, the Buckeyes got on the board in the bottom of the second, taking a 2-0 lead.
Mike Kremblas (Sr., Carroll, Ohio) led off with a high pop-up that fell untouched in shallow right center field. Jason Trott (Jr., Dublin, Ohio) followed with a single to right center that moved Kremblas over to third. Jason Turner (So., Versailles, Ohio) stepped to the plate and sacrificed to left field, allowing Kremblas to score and Trott moved over to second on a fielder’s choice and advanced to third on a wild pitch. He scored when Jason Driscoll (So., Middlefield, Ohio) singled to left center field, putting the Bucks up by two.
The Buckeyes tacked on two more runs in the third inning, increasing their lead to 4-0. Lou Santangelo (Jr., Youngstown, Ohio) led off with a double to left field and then slid down to third base on a passed ball, scoring on Mike Lockwood’s (So., Powell, Ohio) sacrifice fly to left field. Mark Carek (Sr., Bowling Green, Ohio) walked and Dan Seimetz (Sr., Massillon, Ohio) moved him to third when he rapped his first hit since March 1 against Iowa State in the Lake Area Classic championship game. This was Seimetz’s first appearance since being carded to start against Oral Roberts on March 5 when he tore the lateral capsule in his left knee.
Carek scored OSU’s second run of the inning when Trott singled to center field. The Griffins managed one run in the top of the fifth inning when Thompson gave up back-to-back hits after falling behind on a few batters. Seimetz brought the Buckeye lead back to four runs when he drilled his fourth home run of the season (41st of his career) over the right field wall. It was his first round tripper since setting the school home run mark against Iowa State. With two outs, Turner singled to right field and scored when Chad Ehrnsberger (Fr., Kalida, Ohio) smoked a double to the gap in left center field. Driscoll and Santangelo both walked to load the bases for Lockwood who tripled to right field, driving in three more Buckeye runs and taking the score to 9-1.
OSU added a tenth run in the sixth inning as Seimetz doubled to lead off the inning, giving the Bucks a runner in scoring position. Tom Durant (Jr., Columbus, Ohio) entered the game to run for Seimetz and scored on Kremblas’s infield single after advancing to third on a wild pitch. OSU will play Albright today at 2 p.m. at Bishop Verot High School in the second half of a split doubleheader.
