COLUMBUS, Ohio – The No. 24 Ohio State baseball saw its 17-game winning streak come to an end Sunday in the second game of a doubleheader at Iowa, falling 7-1 to the Hawkeyes at Duane Banks Field. Ohio State (20-5 overall, 3-1 Big Ten) fell behind 5-0 in the second inning and could not recover as Iowa (9-10, 1-4) held on for the win. Despite the loss, the Buckeyes won the four-game series. OSU has won or tied 80-of-92 Big Ten series under head coach Bob Todd.
“Anytime you can go on the road and win three-out-of-four, its a good weekend,” head coach Bob Todd said. “We didn’t play well in the second game. At the end of the season, you hope some losses don’t come back to haunt you.”
Ohio State starter Josh Newman (Fr., Wheelersburg, Ohio) was tagged with the defeat, giving up seven hits and six earned runs in 4.1 innings of work. He walked three and struck out four as his record dipped to 3-2 on the year. Iowa starter Ryan Mentkowski (2-2) earned the win, firing a complete-game eight-hitter. He walked two and fanned three.
Iowa broke into the scoring column in the second inning. With the bases loaded and two out, Lance Guyer was hit by a pitch from Newman. John Paul Cappellano followed with a single into right field, scoring two runs. The Hawkeyes scored another run when Trent McIlvain (Sr., Louisville, Ohio) misplayed a throw to second base. Kurt Vitense then singled to right to drive home the Hawkeyes’ fifth run of the inning.
The Hawkeyes’ tacked two more runs in the fifth inning. With one out, Ian Mattiace laced a RBI single and Alex Dvorsky followed with a run-scoring single to center field. Ohio State dented the scoreboard in the sixth inning. Nick Swisher (So., Parkersburg, W. Va.) led off with a single and Doug Deeds (Fr., Bexley, Ohio) followed with a double to right field. One out later, Steve Caravati (Fr., Dover, Ohio) ripped a single to left field, scoring Swisher.
One of the Buckeye bright spots came from McIlvain, who extended his hitting streak to 10 games with a second-inning single. Deeds went 2-for-3 in the contest and finished 4-for-7 in the doubleheader.
Ohio State returns home to Bill Davis Stadium Wednesday, kicking off a seven-game homestand with a 6:35 contest vs. Wright State. The Buckeyes will play 18 of their next 22 games at home.
