COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio State starts its final week of the season by hosting in-state foe Cincinnati on Tuesday night. First pitch from Bill Davis Stadium is set for 6:05 p.m.
The teams met earlier this season on March 2 in Cincinnati and the Bearcats hit a walk-off home run in the bottom of the win 5-4. Overall, this will be the 98th all-time meeting between Ohio State and Cincinnati on the diamond. Ohio State leads the series 69-28 but the Bearcats have won the last four meetings in 2017, 2018, 2019 and 2022.
The Opponent
- Cincinnati is 21-27 on the year and 10-11 in American Athletic Conference play
- Five Bearcats are hitting over .300 on the season, led by Joe Powell at .341. Paul Komistek is the only player on the team to have started all 48 games and he is hitting .330 with eight home runs and 27 RBI
- Griffan Merritt has hit a team-high 17 home runs and has 47 runs batted in
- Starter Alex Shea will be making his fourth start of the season. He is 0-3 with an 8.47 ERA in 17.0 innings. He also started the first game against Ohio State in March and went 2.2 innings, allowing two earned runs on two hits with four walks.
Ohio State Quick Hitters
- Ohio State has played well the last two Big Ten weekends, sweeping Northwestern in Evanston after scoring 45 runs and then taking two of three from Penn State at home last weekend.
- Zach Dezenzo hit .474 (9-of-19) with four home runs, a double, triple and nine runs batted in last week in five games. Had a hit in all five games last week to extend his hitting streak to a career-high 16 games. He also homered in all three games of the Buckeyes series win over Penn State, including twice in the series finale.
- Dezenzo has 17 home runs on the season which is two away from Dan Seimetz single-season school record of 19 in 1997. For his career, he has 36 home runs which is fourth-most in school history and one behind Jeff King (1981-84) for third and three behind Scott Kaczmar (1992-95) for second.
- Brent Todys, last week’s Big Ten Player of the Week, is hitting .315 on the season and has nine multi-hit games this season.
- Marcus Ernst has a team-high 21 multi-hit games and continues to lead the team with a .351 average.
- Archer Brookman is a point away from hitting .300 on the year. He is currently on an eight-game hitting streak and has reached base in each of the last 10. He has had two hits in half of the games of his eight-game streak
- Trey Lipsey and Kade Kern have manned left field and center field all season and both are hitting .297 on the season.
- Starter Aaron Funk is coming off his best start as a Buckeye as he worked 4.0 scoreless innings while allowing just two hits against Campbell last Wednesday He is 0-2 on the year with a 6.00 ERA in 27.0 innings.
