Joe Kim joined the Ohio State football staff in March 2026 as a Defensive Analyst (DL). A respected consultant and coach with more than 30 years of experience in the National Football League, Kim arrives in Columbus following one season at Illinois, where he served as the program’s Skill Development Coordinator.
Before joining Illinois, Kim served as the New England Patriots’ Director of Skill Development from 2019–24 after spending the 2018 season as the team’s pass rush consultant. His extensive NFL career also includes stops with the Dallas Cowboys, Miami Dolphins, Green Bay Packers, Denver Broncos, Buffalo Bills, Kansas City Chiefs, New York Giants, Chicago Bears, Washington Redskins, and Cleveland Browns. He began his coaching career in 1992 with the Browns under head coach Bill Belichick as a pass rush consultant and assistant strength coach.
Nick Saban has called Kim “the pass-rush guru” for his innovative teaching methods that apply martial arts–based principles to football technique. A seventh-degree black belt in taekwondo, Kim’s NFL experience includes the Super Bowl LIII champion New England Patriots, and he has trained multiple Pro Bowl defenders such as Matt Judon, Tamba Hali, Justin Houston, Anthony Pleasant, and Michael Dean Perry.
During his lone season in Champaign, Ill. in 2025, Kim helped guide the Fighting Illini to nine wins, including a victory over No. 23 Tennessee in the Liberty Mutual Music City Bowl, and a final No. 25 national ranking in the Coaches Poll. Under his direction, All-Big Ten honoree Gabe Jacas finished tied for second in the conference in sacks (11.0) and ranked among the Big Ten leaders in forced fumbles (3) and sack yards (60).
A seventh-degree black belt and one of the country’s most accomplished taekwondo instructors, Kim has produced more than 250 black belts and numerous national and international champions. He is also the founder of Football Combatives, a training platform dedicated to teaching his proven pass-rush and hand-combat techniques to players and coaches at all levels.
Kim and his wife, Jeana, have two daughters, Katie and Lexi.
