
Six Buckeyes Earn All-America Honors

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches’ Association (USTFCCCA) announced its indoor All-Americans. Six Buckeyes earned a spot on an All-American team following their performances at the NCAA Indoor Championships last weekend.
Adelaide Aquilla and Anavia Battle were named All-American First Team for finishing in the top-eight individually, while Luke Bendick, Tyler Johnson, Amaya Ugarte and Leo Uusimaki were named All-American Second Team.
At the NCAA Championships, Aquilla was the runner-up in the women’s shot put with a top throw of 17.95m after winning the Big Ten Championship (18.71m) at the end of February. Battle finished third in the 200m (22.63) at the NCAA’s after capturing Big Ten titles in both the 200m (22.39) and the 60m (7.28). Battle was the unanimous selection for the Big Ten Women’s Track Athlete of the Championships, while Aquilla earned the honor on the women’s field athlete side and was the Big Ten Sportsmanship Honoree. Both were named to the All-Big Ten First Team.
Bendick tied his career-best in the men’s pole vault (5.45m) at NCAA Championships to finish ninth overall after clearing that same mark to win the Big Ten Championship. Johnson was just two-hundredths of a second away from qualifying for the 400m finals at NCAA’s as he finished ninth (46.59). He won the Big Ten Championship in both the 400m (45.31) and 200m (20.76). Ugarte tied her second-best high jump of the season (1.78m) to finish 13th at the NCAA Championships. At the Big Ten Championships she finished third by clearing the same height. Uusimaki finished 13th in the heptathlon at NCAA’s, including a win in the pole vault portion (5.16m), with a total of 5,752 points. He won the heptathlon at the Big Ten Championships (5,789). Bendick, Johnson and Uusimaki all earned a spot on the All-Big Ten First Team while Johnson was also named the Big Ten Men’s Track Athlete of the Championships.
