COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ronnie Dawson, a sophomore outfielder on the Ohio State baseball team, was named the Mike Schmidt Player of the Year and the Roland Hemond Pro Prospect of the Year, the Prospect League announced recently. Dawson, a native of Grove City, Ohio, led the Chillicothe Paints this past summer at the plate and in the field. He batted .303 with 11 doubles, three triples, 11 home runs, 44 RBI, 45 runs scored, 32 walks and 17 stolen bases in 57 games. His 11 home runs were the most in the league, while his 44 RBI and 45 runs scored were good enough for second.
See below for a Q&A with Dawson:
Q: What’s it like being recognized by the Prospect League for the success you had this past summer?
A: It’s a great honor to achieve, but I’m not satisfied. I’m working hard every day to improve my game whether it is in the weight room, on the field or in the cages. The ultimate goal is to help this team win a Big Ten championship.
Q: What improvements have you noticed since the end of your freshman season last spring?
A: I was happy with the little things. I told myself I wanted to get my arm stronger and work on my speed. I thought I improved my power at the plate to the opposite field too.
Q: What was it like playing against guys from across the country in summer ball?
A: There was good talent across the board. We played guys from the West Coast to the East Coast. Playing against guys from different areas, you see a different type of game, which was nice to see. I thought it helped my game by just watching other guys compete. It was a great experience and the support I had was great from my family and friends.
Q: What are your expectations this fall?
A: I’m going to try to lead by example. Last year when I came in, I wasn’t expected to play as much, but that was motivation for me. I want to show the coaches how hard I’ve been working. I’m excited to get back to work with my teammates.
