COLUMBUS, Ohio – It was a tale of two halves for rivals Ohio State and Michigan as both teams scored two second half goals and the game would end in a 2-all tie. Both teams are now 3-1-1 on the season.
In a sport traditionally played in the fall, the weather on Monday afternoon was very fall-like. Temperatures were in the mid to upper 30s at the start of the match with a cool breeze whipping around Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium. A rain and sleet mix started midway through the second half and made the final 40 minutes a little bit miserable.
Parker Grinstead scored Ohio State’s first goal in the 61st minute and then assisted on Ty Konrad’s game-tying goal in the 75th minute. For Grinstead, that was his third goal of the season while Konrad found the back of the net for the first time this year.
Neither team was able to muster much offensively in the first half as there were just four combined shots and only one on goal. Interestingly, that was the drier of the two halves.
Michigan came out the more aggressive side at the start of the second half and tallied the first goal in the 54th minute. Evan Rasmussen found Inaki Rodriguez on a cross and Rodriguez was able to finish for his first goal of the year.
The Buckeyes answered in the 61st minute as Luke Kiley hit Grinstead who was able to finish from the right side of the box. Michigan answered just over a minute later off a set piece as Marc Ybarra played a ball into the box that was headed home by Jackson Ragen.
Trailing 2-1 in the 75th minute, Grinstead crossed a ball from deep in the corner that was batted around by a couple of Michigan defenders before settling at Konrad’s feet. He put the 8-yard shot away to tie the game.
Then in extra time, there was just one shot by Ohio State as neither side was able to mount much of an attack.
As is the case in most events between Ohio State and Michigan, it was a little bit chippy. There was a total of 29 fouls and five yellow cards assessed in the contest. That may have also led to the sluggish offense for each team.
The Buckeyes head out on the road for the next two matches. They will play at Wisconsin on Friday afternoon and then play at Penn State on Tuesday, March 23.
