No. 9 Buckeyes Post 6-1 Road Win over Spartans

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The No. 10-ranked Ohio State women’s tennis team moved to 14-3 on the year and 11-1 in the Big Ten with a 6-1 win at Michigan State Friday evening.

Against the Spartans (4-9, 4-8 B1G), Kolie Allen, Irina Cantos Siemers and Luna Dormet all won in singles and doubles for the Buckeyes, with Lucia Marzal and Lisa Hofbauer picking up singles wins.

Sunday, the Buckeyes will take on No. 14 Michigan (12-1, 12-0 B1G) at noon in Ann Arbor. (Live Scoring & Video)

In Doubles

  • The Buckeyes continued their trend of winning the doubles point in Big Ten matches, taking a 1-0 lead for a 12th straight match.
  • The duo of Irina Cantos Siemers and Luna Dormet posted a 6-1victory over Ayshe Can and Dagmar Zdrubecka on court three. Dormet and Cantos Siemers are 8-0 in doubles this spring.
  • The Spartans took the match on court two, as Samantha Memije and Nicole Stephens defeated Lucia Marzal and Lisa Hofbauer, 6-4.
  • The court one match between No. 65-ranked Isabelle Boulais and Kolie Allen of Ohio State and the Spartans’ Mary Lewis and Maja Pietrowicz went to the Buckeyes after the Spartan duo retired when the Buckeyes were leading 5-4. The Ohio State tandem is now 10-1 in dual matches.

In Singles

  • The Buckeyes captured three singles matches in straight sets and two in a super tiebreaker for the win.
  • Michigan State tied the match at one when Boulais retired from her match against Lauren Lemonds on court one after dropping the first set, 6-3.
  • Ohio State answered with straight set wins on courts five, six and two to clinch the team win.
  • On court five Marzal posted a 6-2, 6-2 win over Stephens and Dormet was a 6-0, 6-1 winner against Zdrubecka on court six. Marzal is 14-1 overall in dual matches and 11-0 this spring in Big Ten play, while Dormet has a 9-1 B1G ledger and 12-1 record in dual matches.
  • On court two, No. 15-ranked Cantos Siemers clinched the win as she defeated Memije, 6-2, 6-1. The Buckeye junior improved to 12-4 in dual matches on the year.
  • The remaining matches went to a super tiebreaker.
  • Allen rallied for a win on court three against Pietrowicz. After losing the first set 6-4, Allen took the second, 6-2. The tiebreaker eventually went to Allen, 13-11; she is now 8-3 in B1G play.
  • The final match was on court four, where Hofbauer prevailed against Can. Hofbauer won the first set but Can rallied in the second for a 7-5 win to force the match tiebreaker. Hofbauer won 10-6 for the match and the Buckeyes’ sixth point. The win was the 10th for Hofbauer in dual matches and her seventh against Big Ten foes.
