COLUMBUS, Ohio – The 14th-ranked Ohio State (11-5, 4-1 Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association) men’s volleyball squad begins a three-match home stand Wednesday, March 2 when the Buckeyes host Clarke (2-9, 0-7) at 7 p.m. Ohio State completes the week when IPFW (6-6, 4-3) comes to town Friday, March 4 at 7 p.m.

A LOOK AT OHIO STATE
The Buckeyes are coached by Pete Hanson. Ohio State is 11-5 overall and 4-1 in the MIVA. The Buckeyes are currently ranked 14th in the USA TODAY/CSTV Top 15 Coaches Poll. Last week the Buckeyes lost to 12th-ranked Loyola, 1-3 (30-27, 20-30, 15-30, 26-30) and defeated Clarke, 3-0 (30-26, 30-18, 30-25) in road contest.
OHIO STATE BY THE NUMBERS
Mark Greaves (Jr., Fenton, Mo.) leads the Buckeyes in points per game at 4.49 with Andy Cole (Jr., Glendale, Wis.) averaging 4.16. Greaves is averaging a team-high 3.96 kills (194) per game with Cole second at 3.79 (163). Layne Dreven (Jr., Pittsburgh, Pa.) is hitting a team-high .466 with Cole and Scott Spurlock (Sr., Stow, Ohio) second at .375. Daniel Mathews (Fr., Shorewood, Wis.) is averaging 12.75 assists (676) per game and is averaging a team-high .43 aces per game with a team-high 23 aces. Mike Wauligman (Sr., Cincinnati, Ohio) leads the team in digs per game with a 1.89 average on 87 digs with Mathews second at 1.43 (76). At the net, Layne Dreven (Jr., Pittsburgh, Pa.) has a team-high 1.43 blocks per game average with Spurlock second at 1.08. Dreven has four solos and 72 assists while Spurlock has four solos and 53 assists. The Buckeyes are hitting .328 and averaging 15.45 kills per game. OSU averages 1.32 aces, 8.13 digs and 2.89 blocks per game. Ohio State opponents are hitting .261 and average 14.19 kills per game. Buckeye opponents average .91 aces, 7.57 digs and 2.07 blocks per game.
A LOOK AT CLARKE
The Crusaders are coached by Joe Fleckenstein. Clarke is 2-9 overall and 0-7 in the MIVA prior to a match at Findlay, March 1. Last week the Crusaders lost 0-3 (21-30, 17-30, 22-30) at Loyola and fell 0-3 (26-30, 18-30, 25-30) at home to Ohio State. Clarke has lost it last five matches.
CLARKE BY THE NUMBERS
Jeff Simundic is leading the Crusaders in points per game with a 3.22 average. Joe Collier ranks second at 2.86. Simundic has a team-high 2.55 kills (74) per game average with Collier second at 2.46 (69). Simundic leads the team in hitting percentage with a .336 average. At setter, Andy Accacian averages 9.30 assists per game on 279 assists. Tyler Galstad leads the team in ace serves with 13 (.46 per game) with Simundic second with 10 (.34). Defensively, Accacin has a team-high 42 digs (1.40 per game) with Collier second with 39 (1.39) and Taylor Albright third with 38 (1.31). At the net, Galstad averages a team-high .79 blocks per game on four solo and 18 assists. Erik Vogt ranks second at .76 with two solos and 21 assists. As a team, Clarke is hitting .150 and averages 10.79 kills per game. The Crusaders average 1.35 aces, 7.68 digs and 1.71 blocks per game. Opponents are hitting .318 and average 14.76 kills per game. Crusader opponents average 1.85 aces, 9.03 digs and 2.69 blocks per game.

Ohio State leads the series with the Crusaders, 17-0. In St. John Arena, the Buckeyes are 9-0. Last season, Ohio State won 3-0 (30-17, 30-17, 30-25) in Columbus and 3-0 (30-24, 30-18, 35-33) in Dubuque. Last week, in Dubuque, the Buckeyes defeated the Crusaders, 3-0 (30-26, 30-18, 30-25).

The Mastodons are coached by Arnie Ball. IPFW is 6-6 overall and has a 4-3 MIVA record. Last week IPFW lost 3-1 (30-25, 30-19, 21-30, 30-19) at Ball State.
IPFW BY THE NUMBERS
Leading IPFW in points per game is Matt Zbyszewski with a 5.40 average. Serdar Sikca ranks second at 3.56. Zbyszewski has a team-high 4.45 kills (227) per game average with Sikca second at 2.59 (132). Leading the Mastodons in hitting percentage is Sikca at .420. Setter Mike Randolph has a 10.35 assists (383) per game average for IPFW. Zbyszewski leads the team in aces with 21 (.41 per game) with Randolph second with 13 (.35). Defensively, Zbyszewski leads the squad with a 2.24 digs (114) per game average with Mike Morici second with 111 (2.18). At the net, Sikca has a team-high 1.47 blocks per game average with 12 solos and 63 assists. Josh Stewart ranks second in blocking at 1.06 with four solos and 50 assists. As a team IPFW is hitting .274 and has a 12.78 kills per game average. The Mastodons average 1.14 aces, 9.61 digs and 2.95 blocks per game. Opponents are hitting .251 and average 15.55 kills per game. IPFW opponents average 1.33 aces, 10.53 digs and 1.96 blocks per game.
OHIO STATE – IPFW SERIES
Ohio State leads the series with IPFW, 53-30. In Columbus the Buckeyes are 30-9. Last season the teams split their league contests with IPFW winning in Ft. Wayne, 3-1 (35-33, 30-20, 30-32, 30-25) and Ohio State winning 3-2 (23-30, 32-30, 30-24, 27-30, 15-7) in Columbus.
REVIEWING THE LOYOLA MATCH
Ohio State dropped a 3-1 (27-30, 30-20, 30-15, 30-26) decision to 12th-ranked Loyola Saturday night in Alumni Gym in Chicago, Ill. Rambler Scott Greene scored a match-high 21 kills (.459) for Loyola with Chris Kozlarek adding 15 (.370) and James Gunst 11 (.474). Ohio State’s Andy Cole scored a team-high 17 kills (.412) with Mark Greaves adding 10. For the match, Loyola hit .395 to .195 for the Buckeyes. The Ramblers had a 65 to 52 margin in kills while Ohio State had a seven to six advantage in ace serves. OSU’s Daniel Mathews tied his career-high of four ace serves for the third time this season. The Buckeyes gave up 15 service errors to 14 for Loyola. The Ramblers had a 45 to 37 margin in digs with Loyola’s Krystian Krzyzak recording a match-high 17. At the net, Loyola had a 12 to five advantage in team blocks. Rambler James Gunst recorded a match-high seven blocks with a solo and six assists. Loyola setter Brian Guntli had a match-high 55 assists to 47 for OSU’s Mathews.
REVIEWING THE CLARKE MATCH
Ohio State stopped a three-match losing streak with a 3-0 (30-26, 30-18, 30-25) victory over Clarke Sunday evening in the Kehl Center in Dubuque, Iowa. OSU’s Layne Dreven scored a team-high 9.5 points with Daniel Mathews, Scott Spurlock and Sam Stevens had eight each. Clarke’s Erik Vogt scored a team-high 11 points for the Crusaders with Taylor Albright adding eight. For the match, Ohio State hit .369 to .160 for the Crusaders. The Buckeyes had a 45-35 advantage in kills with Clarke’s Vogt recording a match-high nine (.333). Ohio State had an eight to six margin in ace serves with OSU’s Mathews recording a match-high four aces, tying his career high. Defensively, the Buckeyes had a 27-20 advantage in digs with OSU’s Stevens and Clarke’s Andy Accacian recording a match-high six each. Clarke produced a five to four margin in team blocks. Dreven (0 solos, 3 assists) for the Buckeyes and Tyler Galstad (1-2) and Vogt (1-2) shared match-high honors with three blocks each. Ohio State Mathews recorded a match-high 38 assists with Clarke’s Accacian picking up 23.
MARCH 13 START TIME AGAINST MERCYHURST CHANGED TO 7 P.M.
Ohio State’s home match starting time against Mercyhurst has been changed from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. due to a series of event adjustments needed to allow the men’s ice hockey team has home ice for the Central Collegiate Hockey Association first round playoff games.
MATHEWS SERVES UP FOUR ACES IN BOTH MATCHES LAST WEEK
Daniel Mathews equaled his career-high of four aces at Loyola and at Clarke last week. He set his career-high against Juniata and had another four aces at Mercyhurst. Mathews collected 47 assists against Loyola, equaled his career high of four kills (.375) while adding three digs and two assist blocks. At Clarke, he produced 38 assists, adding four digs, three kills and a solo block.
GREAVES – OSU’S TOP HITTER
Mark Greaves leads the Buckeyes in kills per game at 3.96 and in points per game at 4.50 this season. At Loyola, he had 10 kills and added six digs. Against Clarke he had six kills and three digs in the one game he played.
DREVEN IS THE TOP PERCENTAGE HITTER IN LEAGUE PLAY
Layne Dreven leads the MIVA in hitting percentage with a .594 average. He was ranked 10th in the country last week at .472. At Loyola last week Dreven had eight kills (.444), adding an ace serve and three assist blocks. In the Clarke match, he had seven kills (.417), an ace serve and three assist blocks. At 1.43 blocks per game, Dreven is OSU’s top blocker and ranks fourth in the MIVA at 1.18.
WAULIGMAN LEADS OSU IN DIGS
Mike Wauligman has a team-high 87 digs for OSU for a 1.89 per game average. He had nine digs at Loyola, adding five kills, a solo and an assist block against the Ramblers. Against Clarke he had three digs and five kills against the Crusaders.
COLE HAS 17 KILLS AGAINST LOYOLA
Andy Cole scored a team-high 17 kills at Loyola last week while hitting .412. He added six digs, a season-high two ace serves and an assist block in the contest. Against Clarke he had seven kills (.211), two digs and an assist block against the Crusaders. Cole ranks second in points (4.17) and kills (3.79) per game on the squad
SPURLOCK RANKS SECOND IN BUCKEYE BLOCKING
Scott Spurlock, with a 1.08 blocks per game average ranks second for Buckeyes. He has four solos and 53 assist blocks on the season. Last week at Loyola, Spurlock had six kills, a dig and an assist block. Against Clarke, he had seven kills (.545) two digs and an ace serve in the match.
STEVENS HAS SIX KILLS AND SIX DIGS AGAINST CLARKE
Sam Stevens (Jr., Miami, Fla.) had six kills against Clarke to equal his season high and added a season-high six digs in the contest. He added an ace serve and two assist blocks against the Crusaders. At Loyola, Stevens had a kill and a dig against the Ramblers.
MARTIN HAS DOUBLE-FIGURE DIGS AGAINST LOYOLA
Conor Martin had 10 digs at Loyola last week for his second double-figure digs match of the season. He had a career-high 12 digs against Quincy. Martin has had nine starts at libero this season and has seen action in all 16 matches. He has 68 digs on the season for a 1.42 per game average. Last week he recorded his first kill of his career at Loyola.
COLE NOW 15TH IN OHIO STATE CAREER POINTS
Andy Cole has moved past Tom Trantow (1999-03) in career points to move to 15th on the OSU career list. He now has 954.5 points passing Trantow with 954.0. Cole needs two points to pass No. 14 Craig Geibel (199-93) with 956.
GREAVES MOVES TO 21ST IN OSU CAREER POINTS
With 28.5 points on the weekend, Mark Graves has moved to 21st on the Ohio State career points list with 818.5. He moved past Jon Yunker (1993-94) with 811.0. Greaves needs 22 points to pass No. 20 Tom Hoff (1992-93) with 840.0 points.
GREAVES NOW 10TH IN OSU CAREER ACES
With an ace serve against Rutgers-Newark, Mark Greaves has move to 10th on the Ohio State career ace list with 60. He previously was tied with Greg Lehman (1998-01) and Colin McMillan (1997-00) at 59. Greaves needs three aces to pass No. 9 Jeff Koterba (1995-98) with 62.
SPURLOCK MOVES TO FIFTH IN OSU CAREER ASSIST BLOCKS
With an assist block against Rutgers-Newark and Penn State, Scott Spurlock now has 316 in his career and has moved to fifth on the Ohio State career assist blocks list with 316. He passed Adam Spitznagle (1993-96) with 315. Spurlock needs 11 assist blocks to move past No. 4 Gary Wrobel (1994-97) with 326). He stands eighth in total blocks with 331 (15-316) and seventh in blocks per game at 1.25.
BUCKEYE CONFERENCE HOME WINNING STREAK ON THE LINE
Ohio State has won 10 consecutive home MIVA regular season conference matches (2 in 2005 and 8 in 2004). OSU’s last home conference loss was at the end of the 2003 season, a 0-3 (30-28, 30-22, 34-32) loss to Ball State on April 12, 2003. In St. John Arena, the Buckeyes have won the last 18 regular season contests (7 in 2005 and 11 in 2004). OSU’s last regular season home loss was Jan. 24, 2004, a 3-1 (30-23, 30-23, 28-30, 30-25) loss to Brigham Young. Including all matches, the Buckeyes have a seven-match home winning streak, winning all seven home contests this season. OSU last loss in St. John Arena was a 3-1 (26-30, 32-30, 30-22, 30-28) loss to Lewis in the MIVA Semifinals on April 30, 2004.
MATHEWS NAMED TO GOLDEN DOME CLASSIC TEAM
Daniel Mathews was named to the Golden Dome Classic team for his play last week against Rutgers-Newark and Penn State. He had 47 assists against the Scarlet Raiders, adding four digs, two kills and two assist blocks. In the Penn State match he had 35 assists, three digs, three total blocks (1-2) and a kill. Mathews averaged 13.67 assists per game on the weekend.
BUCKEYES RANKED 14TH IN USA TODAY/CSTV COACHES POLL
Ohio State remains 14th in the latest USA TODAY/CSTV Coaches Poll released this week. Ohio State moved from 36 points to 33 points in the poll this week. The Buckeyes began the season ranked tenth.
HISTORY OF OHIO STATE MEN’S VOLLEYBALL
The Ohio State men’s volleyball program began in 1968 under head coach Karl Dunlap. In the 38-year history of the program, the Buckeyes have compiled a 801-328-3 (.709) overall record. OSU has won or shared 18 championships in the Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association and has won nine MIVA Tournament Championships. The Buckeyes have participated in 13 NCAA Championships, the latest in 2001. Ohio State reached the NCAA Championship match in 1977 and 2000.
MIVA ADDS CARTHAGE AND MSOE AS PROVISIONAL MEMBERS
The Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association has added Carthage College (Kenosha, Wis.) and the Milwaukee School of Engineering (Milwaukee, Wis.) to the league as provisional members. The Division III schools will not compete for the conference championship in 2005.
