CLEVELAND, Ohio – In front of a crowd of 45,523 in FirstEnergy Stadium, the No. 10/9 Ohio State men's hockey team defeated No. 4 Michigan, 4-2, Saturday afternoon in the Faceoff on the Lake. The Buckeyes never trailed in the game, helped by three second period tallies. Ohio State, which won 53-of-82 faceoffs, had both a power play and a shorthanded goal in the win, with the power play 2-for-6 and the penalty kill 7-for-7. Jake Wise led the Buckeyes with three points on a goal and two assists and goalie Jakub Dobes had 35 saves, including 19 in the third period.
Ohio State improves to 18-11-3 on the year and is 11-9-2-0-0-1 in the Big Ten, tied with Michigan for second place in the league Ten with one week remaining in the regular season. The Wolverines are 20-10-2 and 12-9-1-3-2-0 in the B1G. The Buckeyes took five points in the series this week, with a 3-3 OT tie and shootout win Thursday. The Short Story
- There were no goals in the first period, with Ohio State outshooting Michigan, 14-7. Each team had three power play chances in the opening 20 minutes.
- In the second Cole McWard put the Buckeyes on the board at 14:21, taking a pass from Joe Dunlap on a 2-on-1 and scoring far side from the faceoff circle.
- The second period was suspended with 4:59 remaining for ice repairs, with Ohio State holding its 1-0 lead. The teams went to the lockerroom for intermission and returned to play the remainder of the second, then took a two minute break before starting the third.
- In the resumption of the second period, the teams combined for three goals in two minutes, with two Ohio State scores sandwiched around a Michigan tally.
- Jake Wise put Ohio State up 2-0 at 17:11. On the power play, Travis Treloar found Wise in front and he redirected the puck past the UM goalie. Stephen Halliday also assisted on the goal, Wise's 11th of the year and his eighth on the power play.
- Michigan scored less than a minute later, with Gavin Brindley finding the back of the net at 18:25.
- Ohio State had the answer. Tyler Duke, a freshman and Cleveland area native (whose brother plays for the Wolverines) scored shorthanded at 19:11. The Buckeyes had a 2-on-1 rush on the penalty kill. The original shot went behind the net and Wise found Duke in the high slot and he was able to find the back of the net with the goalie out of position.
- In the second, shots were 13-10 in favor of the Buckeyes in the full middle period.
- The Wolverines made it a one-goal game at 8:46 of the third when Eric Ciccolini tallied on a rebound.
- But the Buckeyes again responded, converting on a power play less than a minute later. A pass from Stephen Halliday went off the goalie and in at 9:42, assisted by Wise and Mason Lohrei.
- The Wolverines pulled their goalie for the final 3:43 but the Buckeyes held strong. Ohio State goalie Jakub Dobes made 19 saves on 20 Michigan shots in the stanza.
- For the game, Michigan ended ahead in shots, 37-34, with Dobes making 35 saves in all 60 minutes. Ohio State blocked 10 Michigan shot attempts, led by Scooter Brickey with four.
- The teams combined for 13 penalties for 26 minutes. Ohio State was 2-for-6 with the man advantage and the penalty kill stopped all seven Wolverine chances.
