Kuzniewski Dominant in 2-1 Win Over No. 16 Nebraska

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Sophomore right-hander Gavin Kuzniewski tossed a gem as the Ohio State baseball team (22-21, 11-11 Big Ten) defeated No. 16 Nebraska (34-12, 17-5 Big Ten), 2-1, on Friday night at Bill Davis Stadium.

- Kuzniewski started things off strong for the Buckeyes, fanning two of three faced in the top of the first inning and picking up a third K in the top of the second.
- Dane Harvey singled to center field to lead off the bottom of the second for the Buckeyes. An infield single from Maddix Simpson and a walk for Mason Eckelman loaded the bases. Harvey was sent home on a sacrifice fly from Grant Mangrum to give Ohio State a 1-0 lead.
- With two outs in the bottom of the fourth inning, Lee Ellis singled to center field and then swiped second, but there was nothing else doing for the Buckeyes.
- Henry Kaczmar reached base on a Nebraska error and Noah Furcht walked to put two Buckeye runners on base in the bottom of the fifth, but they were stranded.
- Simpson led off with a double to right center in the bottom of sixth and advanced to second on an Eckelman groundout. A sacrifice fly from Ellis plated Simpson to put Ohio State ahead of the Cornhuskers, 2-0.
- In the top of the ninth with two outs, Nebraska scored on an RBI groundout to cut the Buckeye lead in half, 2-1, but reliever Ryan Zamora earned the game-winning strikeout.
- Kuniewski (4-2) pitched a career-high eight innings. He fanned four and gave up just one run on four hits.
- Zamora earned his third save of the season. He struck out one in 1.0 scoreless, hitless innings.
- Simpson led the Buckeyes with two hits.
- The Buckeyes continue their series against the Cornhuskers with game two on Saturday, May 2 at 7 p.m. and game three on Sunday, May 3 at 2 p.m.
