Noting the Buckeyes
After falling short in consecutive games against Michigan, the Buckeyes were able to bounce back with a 13-2 win in the series finale. The win got etched in the record books, as Ohio State's seven home runs tied a program record for most in a single game. The record was set against Cornell on February 21, 2025, and tied again on March 25, 2025, against Purdue Fort Wayne. The weekend brought Ohio State's season home run total to 96, good for third best in the nation.
Abbie Wilhelm made history of her own, becoming just the fifth Buckeye in program history to homer three times in one game. Teammate Reagan Milliken became the third nearly a year-earlier to the date, on April 13, 2025, against Penn State. Wilhelm has been an offensive force for Ohio State much of the season, hitting .366 and slugging .911 on the year. Her 18 home runs are third best among Big Ten hitters and are tied with teammate Hadley Parisien for most on the roster. Taylor Cruse is on her heels in that ranking, with 17 home runs on the year that are fourth-most in the conference.
Sami Bewick has ridden her current six-game hitting streak to a .379 average that leads the Buckeye offense and cracks 19th among conference bats. She joins Parisien, Skylar Limon, Cruse, and Wilhelm for averages above .360. Cruse leads the squad in RBI, with 39, where Parisien leads in both average (.409) and OPS (1.580).
While Jenna Molk leads the Ohio State pitching stable in ERA, wins, innings pitched, and strikeouts, it was Lorin Boutte's performance in the circle that kept the Buckeyes competitive against Michigan. Boutte tossed 11.2 innings in the series, 10.1 of which were shutout. Boutte also struck out 15 on the weekend.
On the Panthers
Pitt comes to Columbus 21-20, coming off two conference losses to Clemson. The Panthers are 7-11 in ACC play, and are no stranger to Big Ten competition, having faced Michigan, Michigan State, and Penn State this season. The Pitt offense is hitting .256 collectively, headed by KK Esparza, whose .351 average, eight home runs, and 34 RBI each lead the team. Kyra Pittman leads the pitching staff in wins, posting a 7-6 record thus far. Pittman holds an ERA of 4.10, which also leads the squad. However, it is Gwen Sparks who holds the leading strikeout and opponent batting average numbers, retiring 62 batters on the year and holding opponents to an average of .228. The Panthers and Buckeyes last matched up on April 9, 2025, in Pittsburgh, with the Buckeyes taking a 12-2 run rule victory.
