COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio State (5-7, 0-1 Big Ten) was defeated by No. 1 UCLA (11-2, 1-0 Big Ten), 11-1, Friday in the first game of a three-game series at Bill Davis Stadium to open Big Ten play.

- The Bruins struck in the top of the first after an RBI single, a score on a Buckeye error and a bases-loaded walk, 3-0.
- The Buckeyes rallied with two outs in the bottom half of the inning, Mason Eckelman slashed a double down the left field line and Noah Furcht walked, but the two were left stranded.
- In the top of the second, the Bruins grabbed four runs off of a pair of two-run home runs to left field.
- The Bruins scored another in the fourth off of two walks, a single and a Buckeye error, extending their lead to eight, 8-0.
- Ohio State rallied with two outs again in the bottom of the fifth after back-to-back singles from Alex Bemis and CJ Reid, but the pair were left stranded.
- Sahil Patel came in out of the bullpen in the fifth inning and delivered three consecutive scoreless innings, holding the Bruins to two hits.
- Dane Harvey put Ohio State on the board with a towering home run off the right field scoreboard, cutting the UCLA lead to seven, 8-1.
- In the top of the eighth, the Bruins sent a two-run home run down the left field line, increasing its lead to nine, 10-1.
- UCLA added another run in the ninth inning with an RBI groundout, defeating the Buckeyes, 11-1.
- Harvey's home run was his first as a Buckeye.
- Gavin Kuzniewski (0-1) took the loss. He gave up five earned runs on six hits in 4.0 innings pitched while striking out four batters.
- Ohio State will continue its series against UCLA with game two on Saturday at 2 p.m. and game three on Sunday at 11 a.m.
