Ohio State Will Play on April 4 for Senior Night against Northern Kentucky
COLUMBUS, Ohio – The No. 15 Buckeyes (12-10) fell to the No. 17 Nittany Lions (12-7) on Wednesday night at Fitzgerald Field House in four sets.
The first set was won in extra points by Penn State with a score of 27-25. The Buckeyes battled to win the second set, 25-20. The Nittany Lions took the third and fourth sets, both with scores of 25-20.
Shane Wetzel led with 14 kills to add to his career total of 1,252 kills. He also led in digs with 10. Eliel Salva-Torres added 12 kills and hit .450 in the match.
Aaron Grimm led the team in total blocks with four. Grimm also hit .500 in the match with six kills on 10 attempts with only one error.
Set 1 (27-25, PSU)
Two service aces by Shane Wetzel got set one started for Ohio State, 2-0. Eliel Salva-Torres put down his first kill of the match for the 3-1 lead. A block by Stanislaw Chacinski and Aaron Grimm kept the Buckeyes in the lead, 5-4. Ohio State went on a 6-1 scoring run to force a timeout by the Nittany Lions, 11-6. A few kills by Wetzel continued the Buckeyes' scoring advantage, 17-13. Another kill by Salva-Torres preserved the lead, 20-17. Penn State tied it at 20-all after a short run. The two teams continued the tie at 23-all. A service ace by Chacinski gave Ohio State its first set point, 24-23. The Nittany Lions took the first set in extra points, 27-25.
Set 2 (25-20, OSU)
A kill by Wetzel put the Buckeyes up early in the second set, 2-0. Penn State tied it at 6-all. A huge block by Daniel Henwood Rodriguez and Salva-Torres gave Ohio State a two-point advantage, 12-10. Owen Pickering added a kill of his own to extend the lead, 14-11. A service ace by Henwood Rodriguez continued the lead to 17-13. Grimm put down a kill to preserve the four-point advantage, 18-14. A massive triple block by Pickering, Wetzel and Salva-Torres kept the lead going strong, 20-17. Henwood Rodriguez won the set for the Buckeyes with a service ace, 25-20.
Set 3 (25-20, PSU)
Salva-Torres put Ohio State on the scoreboard with a kill, 2-1 PSU. Another kill by Grimm tied set three at 6-all. A huge block by Henwood Rodriguez and Grimm tied the set at 11-all. The Nittany Lions went on a small run for the 14-11 lead before an Ohio State timeout. An out-of-system side-out kill by Chacinski put the Buckeyes within two-points, 14-12. Consecutive blocks by Grimm and Chacinski, then Grimm and Pickering, put Ohio State within one-point of the lead, 15-14. Pickering tied set three at 15-all with a kill. Another kill by Pickering preserved the tie at 17-all. Penn State took the third set, 25-20.
Set 4 (25-20, PSU)
Pickering started set four strong for the Buckeyes with another kill, 1-0. Henwood Rodriguez put down a kill of his own that kept Ohio State in it, 6-3 PSU. A pair of kills by Grimm continued to keep the Buckeyes close, 8-5 Lions. Another kill by Henwood Rodriguez made the score 14-10 Penn State. A kill by Chacinski started to close the scoring gap to put Ohio State within two-points, 15-13. Another kill by Wetzel kept the score close, 19-16. Salva-Torres kept it within three-points with a kill out of the middle, 20-17. A kill by Chacinski inched the Buckeyes closer to a tied game, 22-20. The Lions took set four with a score of 25-20.

Up Next: No. 15 Ohio State (12-10, 7-6) will take on Northern Kentucky (3-14, 0-10) at 5 p.m. April 4 at the Covelli Center for Senior Night. Seniors Wetzel, Daniel Hurley and Jack O'Riordan will be honored in their final home game.
