Ohio State Takes Down No. 15 Lewis in Three Sets

Buckeyes Will Compete in Big Ten Matchup vs No. 16 Penn State Wednesday
COLUMBUS, Ohio – No. 18 Ohio State (12-9, 7-6) swept No. 15 Lewis (14-10, 6-5) on Saturday afternoon at the Covelli Center in three sets.

The first set was won by the Buckeyes with a score of 25-19. Ohio State fought to win the second set, 25-23. The third set was taken by Ohio State with a score of 25-14. Â

Shane Wetzel led the Buckeyes in kills with 17, adding to his career total of 1,238. He is now 11th in career kills in the history of the program. Owen Pickering added 10. Both Wetzel and Pickering hit .500 in the match.

Daniel Henwood Rodriguez and Wetzel recorded six digs apiece for Ohio State. Chacinski and Hudson added four each.

Set 1 (25-19, OSU)
Eliel Salva-Torres started the match strong with a solo block out of the middle, 1-0. Shane Wetzel had a service ace that gave Ohio State the three-point lead, 3-0. Owen Pickering preserved the lead with a kill, 4-1. A kill by Wetzel kept the Buckeyes in front, 7-4. Wetzel and Aaron Grimm put up a huge block for the 9-5 lead. A great dig by Grimm and kill by Wetzel continued Ohio State's lead, 12-6. Salva-Torres put down a kill that gave the Buckeyes an eight-point advantage, 17-9. A great set by Daniel Henwood Rodriguez and kill by Grimm kept Ohio State in the lead, 19-13. Lewis started to close the scoring gap, 19-16. A massive kill by Stanislaw Chacinski from the backrow kept the Buckeyes in the lead, 22-17. Consecutive kills by Chacinski gave Ohio State their first set point and forced a Lewis timeout, 24-19. Henwood Rodriguez put up a huge solo block to take the set, 25-19.

Set 2 (25-23, OSU)
The Flyers took an early 4-1 lead. A kill by Pickering kept the Buckeyes in it, 4-2. A service ace by Salva-Torres put Ohio State within one-point, 5-4. Chacinski had a massive solo block that tied the set at 5-all. The Buckeyes took the lead after another kill by Chacinski, 7-6. A kill by Grimm from the middle tied the set at 9-all. Another kill by Pickering kept the set tied, 11-all. Wetzel continued the tie at 15-all with a kill. A triple block by Grimm, Chacinski and Wetzel gave Ohio State back the lead, 17-16. Great attack placement by Pickering extended the lead, 20-17. Lewis tied the set at 21-all. Another kill by Wetzel kept the Buckeyes in front, 23-22. A kill by Chacinski gave Ohio State their first set point, 24-22. The Buckeyes took the second set, 25-23.

Set 3 (25-14, OSU)
Lewis took a small lead to start the third set, 2-0. Chacinski put down a massive backrow kill to put Ohio State on the scoreboard, 2-1. An out-of-system kill by Wetzel tied the set at 3-all. A service ace by Chacinski gave the Buckeyes a two-point advantage, 7-5. Henwood Rodriguez and Salva-Torres put up a huge block that extended the lead, 11-8. Another block by Salva-Torres continued the three-point advantage, 13-10. Three consecutive service aces by Henwood Rodriguez gave Ohio State a six-point lead, 17-11. A massive triple block by Pickering, Grimm and Wetzel extended the lead, 20-12. Wetzel put down another kill for the 22-13 lead. A long rally was put to rest with a kill by Pickering, 23-14. The Buckeyes took set three with a score of 25-14.

Up Next: The Buckeyes (12-9, 7-6) will play at 6 p.m. on March 25 at Fitzgerald Field House vs. Penn State (11-7, 4-0) in a Big Ten face-off. The match will be held at the University of Pittsburgh in a neutral site game. The next home match for Ohio State will be Senior Night at 5 p.m. on April 4 at the Covelli Center vs Northern Kentucky (3-13, 0-9).
