Ohio State Drops First Game Against Purdue

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State softball team (8-14, 2-2 Big Ten) fell short by a score of 12-6 in its series opener at Purdue on Friday evening. The Buckeyes scattered eight hits over the course of the game and saw four solo home runs leave Bittinger Stadium, one each by Hadley Parisien, Sami Bewick, Taylor Cruse, and Kiki Estrada. Parisien finished the day 2-for-4, Estrada was 2-for-3 and Bewick collecting three hits in four at-bats with a home run and a double.

How it Happened

Parisien sent a lead-off bomb to left field to give Ohio State a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning. It was her her consecutive game with a home run.
Purdue tied the game in the bottom half, scoring on a Bella Douglas HBP. Delaney Reefe tacked on two more runs with a double in the gap that gave Purdue a 3-1 lead after one inning of play.
Ohio State evened the score at three apiece in the second, with another leadoff home run, this time off the bat of Sami Bewick. Taylor Cruse solo shot of her own.
Haley Painter put Purdue back in front 5-3 with a two-run single in the bottom of the third inning.
Moriah Polar doubled to score two in the bottom of the fourth, followed up by an Anna Moore single that scored Polar to give Purdue an 8-3 lead through four.
Kiki Estrada got a run back for the Buckeyes with a solo shot in the top of the fifth, the third leadoff homer of the game.
Sara Tarr capitalized on an error in the sixth, scoring Ohio State's fifth run.
Moore singled again in the top of the sixth, scoring Khloe Banks. Moore then scored on a throwing error. Julia Gossett brought in Painter with a sac fly, followed up by a Reefe single that scored Douglas, giving Purdue a 12-5 lead through six innings.
Kiki Estrada scored on a fielder's choice in the top of the seventh, giving the Buckeyes their final total of 6-12.
Jenna Molk (5-9) got the start and the loss, going 3.1 innings and allowing five earned runs. Lorin Boutte tossed 2.2 innings in relief, allowing one earned run and scattering four hits.
Julia Gossett got the start and the win for the Boilermakers, throwing 1.2 innings while allowing three earned runs.
