Buckeyes Back Home to Face No. 11 Lindenwood, No. 14 McKendree This Weekend
COLUMBUS, Ohio – No. 13 Buckeyes (9-6, 4-3) fell to No. 8 Loyola Chicago (10-4, 4-1) in four sets Sunday at Gentile Arena in Chicago.Â
Ohio State took the first set, 25-20. The Buckeyes dropped sets two and three to the Ramblers, 25-15 and 26-24. Set four went to overtime with Loyola Chicago ultimately taking the set, 27-25.Â
Daniel Hurley and Stanislaw Chacinski led Ohio State in kills with 13 each. Shane Wetzel followed close behind adding 12 kills and led in digs alongside Hurley with six apiece.
Eliel Salva-Torres led in blocks with nine. Wetzel and Hurley added five blocks apiece.
Set 1 (25-20, OSU)
The Buckeyes' first point came from a kill by Daniel Hurley to tie the set at 1-all. Consecutive blocks for Eliel Salva-Torres with Shane Wetzel and Hurley gave Ohio State a 5-1 lead. The Buckeyes continued a 5-0 run to force the Ramblers' first timeout. Salva-Torres and Hurley put up another block that kept the lead, 8-4. Aaron Grimm's first kill of the match gave Ohio State a four-point advantage, 12-8. Another massive kill by Salva-Torres extended the lead, 15-10. Hurley's fifth kill of the match kept the momentum for the Buckeyes, 18-10. Ohio State's huge 7-2 run continued its lead, 21-12. The Ramblers went on a 5-1 run of their own, 23-17. A kill by Grimm gave the Buckeyes their first set point, 24-18. Ohio State took set one with a score of 25-20 after another kill by Hurley.
Set 2 (25-15, LUC)
Wetzel and Salva-Torres put up a huge block for the 2-1 lead to start the second set. A backrow kill by Stanislaw Chacinski preserved Ohio State's one-point lead, 3-2. The Ramblers stayed close to tie the set at 6-all. A deep corner kill by Wetzel gave back the lead to the Buckeyes, 7-6. Loyola Chicago took a two-point lead, 9-7. The Ramblers continued their lead, 15-8. A block by Daniel Henwood Rodriguez and Salva-Torres pulled Ohio State within five points, 17-12. Loyola Chicago continued their lead, 22-13. The Ramblers won the second set, 25-15.
Set 3 (26-24, LUC)
The Buckeyes got on the scoreboard first in set three off an attack error by the Ramblers, 1-0. A kill by Wetzel gave Ohio State the lead, 3-2. A massive backrow attack by Hurley extended the Buckeyes' lead, 4-2. Another kill from Wetzel tied the set at 6-all. Chacinski kept the set tied, 9-all. Hurley put up a huge block for the 10-9 lead. A 4-0 run by Ohio State forced a timeout by the Ramblers. Another kill by Hurley gave the Buckeyes a three-point advantage, 14-11. Wetzel kept Ohio State in the lead with another kill, 16-15. The Ramblers took a small lead, 20-17. A kill by Hurley from the outside put the Buckeyes within two points, 21-19. A solo block by Hurley kept the momentum going for Ohio State, 21-20. Another backrow kill by Chacinski tied the third set at 21-all. Salva-Torres put up a solo block that closed the scoring gap, 24-23 Ramblers. A kill by Chacinski sent the third set into overtime, 24-all. Loyola Chicago took the third set, 26-24.
Set 4 (27-25, LUC)
Chacinski started the fourth set with a service ace, 1-0. A setter dump by Henwood Rodriguez kept the Buckeyes in the lead, 5-4. Chacinski tooled off the block to preserve Ohio State's lead, 7-6. Grimm tied the set at 9-all with two kills out of the middle. A service ace by Grimm gave the Buckeyes the lead, 10-9. The Ramblers took a 15-13 lead. A huge kill by Chacinski tied the set at 15-all. Grimm put up another massive kill that kept the set tied, 16-all. Hurley kept Ohio State in it with a kill from the outside, 19-18 Loyola Chicago. Wetzel won the joust that tied the set at 19. A service ace by Wetzel tied the match at 21-all. Consecutive kills by Wetzel kept the Buckeyes alive, 24-23. A block by Ohio State sent the fourth set to extra points, tied at 24. Salva-Torres, Chacinski and Wetzel put up a triple block that tied it at 25-all. The Ramblers took set four, 27-25.

Up Next: The No. 13 Buckeyes will head home to face No. 11 Lindenwood at 7 p.m. Thursday. They will match-up against No. 14 McKendree at 5 p.m. Saturday. Both matches will be held at the Covelli Center and will be live streamed on B1G+.
