Buckeyes Host George Mason, Long Beach State next week
COLUMBUS, Ohio – No. 14 Ohio State (2-0) defeated the New Jersey Institute of Technology (0-2) 3-0 Friday at the Covelli Center.
Ohio State won by scores of 25-21, 25-19, 25-21.
The Buckeyes were led in kills by Shane Wetzel with 10.
Sophomore Daniel Henwood Rodriguez recorded 23 assists to go with six digs. Daniel Hurley led the Buckeyes with eight digs.
Set 1 (OSU, 25-21)
The teams exchanged points in the early going before an NJIT error and kills by Daniel Hurley and Aaron Grimm put the Buckeyes up 6-3. A Stanislaw Chacinski kill led to a Highlander timeout trailing the Buckeyes 7-3. The Highlanders scored twice out of the break before a Shane Wetzel/Grimm block and Chacinski ace made it 9-5 Buckeyes. Ohio State maintained its advantage before a Wetzel ace upped the lead to 12-7. NJIT closed the gap to 14-13 with a pair of aces before a Chacinski kill down the line on the left side made it 15-13 Buckeyes. The Highlanders evened the set at 15-all on an Ohio State error. Ohio State called timeout with NJIT up 18-17. Neither team could gain separation until an NJIT service error and Ohio State block (Daniel Henwood Rodriguez/Grimm) put the Buckeyes up 22-20. The Highlanders called timeout before an Eliel Salva-Torres ace and another Ohio State block (Grimm/Chacinski) made it 24-20. The Buckeyes took the set 25-21 on a Highlander service error.
Set 2 (OSU, 25-19)
NJIT took a small lead at 5-3 before kills by Wetzel and Chacinski evened the set at 5-all. Ohio State kept it going with Wetzel kills around a DHR ace for an 8-5 lead on a 5-0 run. NJIT called timeout and the teams traded service errors before a Chacinski ace made it 10-6. A big triple block by the Buckeyes before a Wetzel kill upped the lead to 12-7. Another Wetzel kill and OSU block doubled the lead to 14-7. NJIT went on a 3-1 run to cut into the Ohio State lead (16-12). The Highlanders made it 17-14 Buckeyes on an OSU error. Ohio State reached 20 points for a 5-point lead on an NJIT service error. The Highlanders could get no closer than four points the rest of the way in a 25-19 win for the Buckeyes.
Set 3 (OSU, 25-21)
Ohio State used 5-1 run to build an 8-5 lead. The Buckeyes used another run of 4-1 to go up 12-7. Kills by Salva-Torres and Hurley upped the advantage to 14-8 Buckeyes. Wetzel made it 15-9 Buckeyes at the media timeout. NJIT scored four of the next five after break to cut into the Ohio State lead, 16-12. The Highlanders made it 19-16 Buckeyes on an OSU error. The Buckeyes went up 21-16 on a NJIT error and Ohio State block. The Buckeyes secured the win, 25-21 with kills by Wetzel and Chacinski.
