No. 13 Ohio State Sweeps Patriots, Improves to 3-0

Buckeyes take on No. 2 Long Beach State Saturday at Covelli
COLUMBUS, Ohio – No. 13 Ohio State (3-0) defeated No. 20 George Mason (0-2) in a 3-0 sweep Thursday at the Covelli Center.
The Buckeyes needed overtime in both of the first sets. Ohio State won the opener 26-24 and the second, 29-27. The Buckeyes cruised in the third, winning 25-17.
Ohio State was led in kills by Shane Wetzel with 17. He moved to the No. 14 spot in career kills at Ohio State with 1,051. Wetzel trails No. 13 Andy Cole (2003-06) with 1,155.
Sophomore Stanislaw Chacinski added 16 kills in the win.
Setter Daniel Henwood Rodriguez finished with 36 assists and six digs. Libero Drew Hudson led both teams with 12 digs, a career high.
Set 1 (OSU, 26-24)
A kill by Stanislaw Chacinski put the Buckeyes on the board first. Ohio State and the Patriots exchanged points before a kill by Aaron Grimm gave the Buckeyes a 6-5 lead. Ohio State went on a 3-0 run before a timeout called by George Mason with the Buckeyes leading 8-5. A Grimm service error turned the ball over to the Patriots before a GMY service error put Ohio State up 9-7. Shane Wetzel made it 11-7 with a service ace. The Buckeyes used a 7-4 run before a timeout by the Patriots stalled the action with Ohio State leading 18-11. A couple attack errors and service errors by the Buckeyes closed the Patriot's gap at 19-18 Buckeyes. Kills by Stanislaw Chacinski and Wetzel pulled the Buckeyes ahead, 21-18. The Patriots tied it up at 22-all after an attack error by Ohio State. Another OSU service error tied it up at 24 all before a kill by Shane Wetzel led to set point for the Buckeyes in overtime. Ohio State claimed the set 26-24 on a GMU attack error.
Set 2 (OSU, 29-27)
A pair of kills by Eliel Salva-Torres gave the Buckeyes a 2-1 early lead. A service ace by Daniel Henwood-Rodriguez made it 6-5 Buckeyes. Kills from Henwood-Rodriguez, Grimm and Wetzel gave Ohio State an 8-5 advantage. The Patriots closed the Buckeye lead by scoring three-consecutive points making it 10-9 before a kill by Chacinski. A service ace by Daniel Hurley upped the lead to 16-12 Buckeyes. An Ohio State block made it 21-17 before a George Mason timeout. The Patriots scored twice out of the break before a Buckeye timeout at 21-19 Ohio State. The Buckeyes called their second timeout following a 3-2 Patriot run to make it 23-22 Buckeyes. George Mason came out of the break with two kills to make it 24-23 Patriots before the Buckeyes tied it at 24-all. A block by Chacinski led to set point at 25-24. An unsuccessful challenge by the Buckeyes tied it at 25 all. A Wetzel kill gave Ohio State another set point at 27-26, only to be answered by a Patriot kill. Chacinski gave Ohio State the second set victory with a backrow kill for a 29-27 Ohio State win.
Set 3 (OSU, 25-17)
The Patriots took a small 3-1 lead at the start of the third set before a kill by Chacinski gave Ohio State the ball at the service line. A Wetzel ace tied it at 3-all. A block by Salva-Torres and Hurley gave the Buckeyes the lead at 4-3. Brady Jones gave Ohio State another lead with a kill that made it 7-6. The teams exchanged points before Wetzel gave the Buckeyes a 13-11 advantage. The Patriots responded with a kill after a timeout, making it 13-12 Buckeyes. A pair of kills by Chacinski gave Ohio State a 15-12 edge. George Mason called their second timeout at 18-13 after a 4-1 run by the Buckeyes. Ohio State began to pull away to make it 22-16. The Buckeyes finished off the set and the match with a 25-17 win for their third-consecutive sweep.
