Buckeyes and Tigers face off for spot in quarterfinals
COLUMBUS, Ohio – The No. 4 seed Ohio State women's tennis team will take on No. 13 LSU at 4 p.m. Friday in the Super Regional round of the 2025 NCAA Championship in Columbus, Ohio.

Ohio State in the NCAA Tournament
- Ohio State is making the 11th consecutive and 21st overall NCAA Tournament appearance in program history.
- This is the fifth time the Buckeyes have reached at least the third round of the NCAA Championship and the second time since the event was changed to Super Regional matches on campus sites.
- Ohio State fell at Stanford in the Super Regionals in 2023, 4-1. Current seniors Sydni Ratliff and Shelly Bereznyak both competed in singles and doubles in the match vs. the Cardinal.
- The Buckeyes advanced to the Round of 16 in 2021 before falling to Texas in Orlando, Fla.
- In Athens, Ga., in 2017, Ohio State won over South Carolina in the Round of 16 and against Texas Tech in the quarterfinals to reach the semifinals for the first time. In 2016, the Buckeyes defeated Georgia Tech in the Round of 16 before falling to Oklahoma State in the quarterfinals, with the matches in Tulsa, Okla.
- This is the seventh time overall, and the fifth year in a row, the Buckeyes were selected to host first and second round matches as a Top 16 seed.
- It is the third time the team was seeded among the top eight (No. 3 in 2017, No. 4 in 2016 and 2025). The Buckeyes were No. 10 in 2022 and 2023, No. 12 in 2024 and No. 15 in 2021.
- Ohio State is 12-2 at home in NCAA action, including wins over Buffalo and Notre Dame last weekend. The Buckeyes topped Youngstown State and UCLA in 2016 and in 2017 defeated Buffalo and Notre Dame. In 2022, the Buckeyes downed Illinois State before falling to Vanderbilt and the following year, Ohio State defeated Xavier and Vandy. Last season, Ohio State prevailed over Toledo before losing to Vanderbilt in the second round.
- The program's first NCAA appearance was in 1996. The Buckeyes qualified six years in a row from 1999-04, had a three-year stretch from 2008-10 and began the most recent streak in 2014 (with no tournament in 2020).
- Under head coach Melissa Schaub, the Buckeyes are 15-10 in NCAA play and have Round of 16/Super Regional (2021, 2023, 2025), quarterfinal (2016) and semifinal (2017) appearances.Â

- Of the 15 other teams who have advanced to the Super Regional round, Ohio State has wins over No. 3 Michigan, No. 8 Duke, No. 12 NC State, Oklahoma State and UCLA this season, with losses to Michigan (twice) and No. 10 Tennessee.Â
- Ohio State is 1-2 all-time against LSU.
- The teams first met in the first round of the 1999 NCAA Tournament, a 5-2 Tiger win in Malibu, Calif.
- The squads faced off in Columbus Feb. 17, 2010, a 5-2 Buckeye win, and LSU posted a 4-2 victory on its home courts March 20, 2012.
- LSU, a member of the SEC, is 23-7 overall and was 10-5 in league play. The squad was a quarterfinalist in the league tournament, with a win over Kentucky and loss to Oklahoma.
- In the NCAA Tournament at home last weekend, the Tigers shut out Stephen F. Austin, 4-0, and topped USC, 4-1, to advance to the Super Regional for the third time in program history (1995, 2000).
- LSU is the No. 13 seed in the NCAA Tournament and is No. 13 in the ITA rankings.
- No. 11 Cadence Brace, No. 49 Kayla Cross and No. 104 Gaby Rivera are all ranked in singles.
- In doubles, Brace and Cross are the nation's No. 5-ranked team. Tilwith Di Girolami and Anita Sahdiieva are No. 39 and Kenna Erickson and Sahdiieva are No. 59.
- Ohio State moved up to No. 4 in the ITA team rankings released last week. It is the program's first time in the Top 5 since it was No. 4 March 7, 2023.
- Five Buckeyes are in the singles rankings: No. 9 Luciana Perry, No. 22 Teah Chavez (a career high), No. 75 Sydni Ratliff. No. 112 Audrey Spencer and No. 116 Nao Nishino.
- In doubles, the duo of Perry and Chavez is No. 22. Spencer and Nishino are ranked No. 75, the first time in the national rankings for the tandem and Nishino's first time in the doubles rankings.
- Ohio State posted two wins in NCAA play in Columbus last weekend.
- In the first round Friday, the Buckeyes shut out Buffalo, 4-0. Ohio State picked up the doubles point with wins on court three from Sydni Ratliff and Dani Schoenly and on court one by Teah Chavez and Luciana Perry. Soon after singles got underway, a lightning delay suspended the match for an hour and 40 minutes. Once play resumed, Chavez, Audrey Spencer and Shelly Bereznyak closed out straight set wins to clinch the match.
- Ohio State defeated Notre Dame 4-1 to advance to the third round. The duo of Chavez and Perry won on court one to open doubles but the Irish took courts two and three for the doubles point. Ohio State went on to capture the first set on all six singles courts. Spencer and Bereznyak won quickly in straight sets for a 2-1 Ohio State advantage. Perry put the Buckeyes up 3-1 with a court two victory, winning the final five games of her match. Chavez clinched the victory on court one. After winning the first set 6-2, Chavez was down 5-0 in the second. The sophomore rallied and won seven straight games for the set and match to send the Buckeyes on to the next round.
Buckeye This and That
- Ohio State enters the NCAA Super Regionals 23-3, tied for the third-most wins in a single season in school history. The 2017 squad set the record with 32, while the 2016 team won 31. In 2021 the Buckeyes also had 23 victories. This is the ninth season with at least 20 wins, with eight of the nine under current head coach Melissa Schaub.
- The Buckeyes are 12-1 at home this season, with the loss to Michigan in a nonconference match April 16.
- In singles, Luciana Perry leads the Buckeyes with a 32-7 ledger overall and she has an 18-3 dual mark. Shelly Bereznyak is 28-8 overall and has posted a 17-4 dual ledger, while Teah Chavez is 26-8 and has a 13-1 dual mark. Nao Nishino is 25-7 overall as a freshman and is 13-2 in dual matches. Audrey Spencer (23-14, 13-8 dual) and Sydni Ratliff (21-9, 14-3) have also posted at least 20 wins on the year.
- In doubles, the duo of Chavez and Perry is first with a 16-6 dual record, followed by Nishino and Spencer who are 11-3.
- Ratliff has moved into the Top 10 in the Buckeye record book with 86 career singles wins, passing Anna Sanford (84) for 10th. Bereznyak is tied for 12th with 82 singles victories as a Buckeye.
- Perry's 32 wins on the year are tied for the sixth-most in a single season in program history. She reached the NCAA singles quarterfinals in the fall to earn her second All-America award.
- As a team, Ohio State was 12-1 in B1G play. The team shut out seven teams in B1G action, with its one league loss to undefeated regular season champion Michigan to finish second. The Buckeye squad went on to defeat the Wolverines in the Big Ten Tournament final.
- Chavez and Perry were both unanimous First Team All-Big Ten selections and Nishino was named to the Big Ten All-Freshman Team. Alessia Cau received the B1G Sportsmanship Award for Ohio State.
- Schaub, in her 13th year as head coach of the Buckeyes, is 260-84 in her career, the Buckeyes' all-time leader in coaching wins.Â
- Eight Buckeyes were recognized as Ohio State Scholar-Athletes this spring –Cau, Spencer, Dani Schoenly, Megan Basil, Nishino, Bereznyak, Ratliff and Chavez.
- Ratliff was also the recipient of a Woody and Anne Hayes Award for postgraduate studies at the Scarlet and Graymies Awards.
Big Ten Tourney Champs
- Ohio State claimed the 2025 Big Ten Tournament April 26 in Ojai, Calif.
- Ohio State's run to the title included a 4-0 win over Illinois and 4-1 victory against Washington before defeating Michigan 4-3 in the final.
- The tournament title was the fourth in Buckeye history (2016, '17, 21). Ohio State was playing in the Big Ten Tournament final for the fifth year in a row, all against the Wolverines, and making the ninth appearance in the final for the program.
- Sydni Ratliff and Luciana Perry were both 3-0 in singles in the tournament and 2-1 in doubles. Ratliff was named the tournament's Most Outstanding Player and was joined by Perry on the all-tournament team.
- In the final vs. the Wolverines, the Buckeyes dropped the doubles point to start the match. Perry and Teah Chavez, on courts two and one, respectively, put Ohio State ahead with straight-set wins. After Michigan posted two singles wins for a 3-2 lead, Ratliff tied the match with a three-set victory, leaving the championship to be decided in a third set on court four between freshmen Nao Nishino of Ohio State and Michigan's Emily Sartz-Lunde. Nishino lost the first set in a tiebreaker and won the second in a tiebreaker, including saving a match point. In the third set, Nishino prevailed 6-4 to clinch the match and the team title.
