Jasmyn Burns goes 2-for-2 with two home runs and seven RBI
PITTSBURGH – The 22nd-ranked Ohio State softball team (31-9-1) returned to its winning ways and did so with a familiar formula. The Buckeyes scored early and often on Wednesday afternoon at Pitt, cruising to a 12-2 run-rule with over the Panthers (13-24) at Vartabedian Field.
Sophomore Jasmyn Burns went two-for-two with two home runs and a career-high seven RBI. She homered in her first two at-bats and set the tone for an Ohio State offense that put three runs on the scoreboard in the first inning, six in the second and two more in the third.
In the circle, Kennedy Kay picked up her ninth win of the season, going four innings while allowing just three hits and one earned run. Freshman Layna Gerhard worked the final inning of the game and gave up one run.
How The Runs Were Scored
- Ohio State worked back-to-back walks in the top of the first inning and cashed in when Burns launched her 18th home run of the season that hit the scoreboard in left field.
- The Buckeyes put six on the scoreboard in the top of the second, highlighted by Burns' second home run of the day, which drove in three runs. Skylar Limon also had an RBI triple, Taylor Cruse drove in a run with a double and Kami Kortokrax had a sacrifice fly.
- Ohio State's lead swelled to 11-0 in the third inning thanks to a RBI double off the bat of Sami Bewick and a bases loaded walk by Burns.
- Pitt scored in the bottom of the fourth inning on a one-out double. Kay avoided further damage, however, by getting a ground out and fly out for the final two outs of the inning.
- In the top of the fifth, Emma Tolley's first hit as an Ohio State Buckeyes was a deep one: she hit a solo home run to straightaway center field that increased the Buckeye lead to 12-1.
Buckeye This and That
- The run rule victory was Ohio State's 16th of the season. Since the start of March, the Buckeyes have 12 run-rule wins.
- Burns' 19 home runs are the second most in single-season school history. The record of 20 is held by Lilli Piper in 2018. Prior to that, Alex Bayne hit 19 in 2017 and Sam Marder also hit 19 in 2009.
- Limon's second-inning triple was her second of the season, which is the most on the team. She also added a third-inning stolen base.
- Ohio State, which entered the day with a nation's-leading 342 runs scored, reached double figures in runs for the 18th time this season.
- Kami Kortokrax played in and started her 196th consecutive game, the longest active streak on the team.
