No. 18 Ohio State Wins Tight 3-1 Match Over No. 14 Lewis

The win was the third consecutive victory over a Top 15 team in Columbus.Â

Ohio State won by scores of 28-26, 26-24, 22-25, 25-18.

Shane Wetzel paced the Buckeyes with 20 kills and 10 digs. Stanislaw Chacinski added 13 kills and eight digs.

Seniors Kyle Teune had nine kills and seven digs while Thomas Leahey came off the bench to add six kills. Cole Young also added six kills on senior night.

Setter Daniel Henwood Rodriguez led with 41 assists.

The last time Ohio State earned three-consecutive wins over Top 15 opponents was at the end of the 2017 season when Ohio State defeated No. 14 Grand Canyon, No. 4 Hawaii and No. 3 BYU to win the national title. The three wins were all by 3-0 scores at St. John Arena in Columbus. Ohio State also knocked off No. 11 Ball State 3-2 to start a streak of four-consecutive Top 15 wins that year. The win over the Cardinals was for the 2017 MIVA Tournament title.

Ohio State has wins over No. 10 McKendree (3-2), No. 15 Ball State (3-1) and Lewis in its last three outings, all at the Covelli Center.
Set 1 (OSU, 28-26)
Three early kills by Stanislaw along with a blast by Shane Wetzel put the Buckeyes up 7-4 early. A kill by Daniel Henwood Rodriguez and two Lewis attack errors during a 3-1 run gave Ohio State a 15-11 lead at the media timeout. The Flyers called a timeout after kills by Cole Young and Chacinski put Ohio State up 20-17. Aaron Grimm added a kill from the middle for a 21-18 Ohio State advantage. Lewis responded with a pair of kills to make it 21-20 Buckeyes before an Ohio State timeout. Wetzel came out of the timeout with a rocket down the left side before a Buckeye service error made it 22-21. Kyle Teune then added a kill off the Lewis block. The Flyers added a kill to make it 23-22 Buckeyes. A Wetzel dink over the Lewis block led to a Flyers timeout with Ohio State serving at set point, 24-22. Lewis scored the next two points to tie it at 24-all. Ohio State called timeout and got the win, 28-26, on a Chacinski kill and block by DHR and Thomas Leahey. Wetzel led with seven kills in the opener to go with five digs.

Set 2 (OSU, 26-24)
The Buckeyes opened the second set with a 4-1 lead. A DHR kill at the net and an Ohio State block made it 6-2 Buckeyes. A Teune ace after a Chacinski kill upped the lead to 8-3 Ohio State. A pair of Teune kills extended the lead to 12-6. A 4-0 run by the Flyers was stopped by a Wetzel kill to make it 13-10 Ohio State. A Lewis service error led to the media timeout with Ohio State leading 15-12. DHR and Chacinski added kills after the break for a 17-14 Buckeye advantage. The Flyers used a 4-1 run to tie it at 18-all. The Buckeyes then called timeout and traded points with the Flyers until kills by Wetzel and Leahey led to a Lewis timeout with the Buckeyes leading 23-21. A Teune kill led to set point, 24-22, before a Lewis timeout. The Flyers scored the next point before an Ohio State timeout up 24-23. Lewis tied it after the break at 24-all on a kill. Wetzel then went back-to-back with kills to win the set for Ohio State, 26-24. He upped his match lead with 13 kills and six digs.Â

Set 3 (LEW, 25-22)
 The set was highly competitive early with Lewis' Oguzhan Oguz assessed a red card to give Ohio State a point to tie it at 7-all. The set continued to go back-and-forth until Lewis scored twice before the media timeout for a 15-13 lead. Ohio State called timeout after a 4-1 Lewis run made it 19-15 Flyers. A pair of Leahey kills from the middle cut the lead to 20-18 Flyers after the break. Wetzel then won a joust at the net to make it 20-19 before a Lewis timeout. The Flyers scored the next two points before the Buckeyes called their final timeout down 22-19. Lewis then got the win, 25-22.

Set 4 (OSU, 25-18)
The Flyers opened with a 3-1 lead before kills by DHR and Leahey made it 5-4 Buckeyes. Kills by Chacinski and Wetzel gave the Buckeyes an 8-6 cushion. A Wetzel kill and Lewis attack error upped the lead to 13-10 Buckeyes. The Flyers responded with a 3-0 run to a 13-all score. A Lewis service error and Wetzel kill made it 15-13 at the media timeout. The Flyers called a timeout after a Chacinski kill made it 16-13 Buckeyes. Ohio State increased the lead to 18-14 after the break following two Lewis errors. After two more Lewis errors, Ohio State took a 21-16 lead. Chacinski made it 22-17 with a blast from the back row. The Buckeyes owned a 23-18 lead after a Lewis error before a Wetzel kill brought it to match point at 24-18. DHR then go the winning kill, 25-18.Â
