Buckeyes and Hawks close out regular season Saturday
COLUMBUS, Ohio -- No. 15 Ohio State (15-10, 10-5) won for the ninth time in 11 outings with a 3-0 victory at Quincy (8-18, 2-13) Friday at Pepsi Arena in Quincy, Illinois.
Ohio State reached 10 wins in league play for the third-consecutive season. The Buckeyes won 11 MIVA matches in both 2023 and 2024. Ohio State won the MIVA postseason tournament in each of the last two years and advanced to the NCAA championships. In all, Ohio State has won 10 or more matches during regular-season conference play 26 times.Â
Against the Hawks, Ohio State won by scores of 25-21, 25-19, 25-18.
Shane Wetzel led the way Friday with 20 kills. He had 10 in the first set.
Setter Daniel Henwood Rodriguez paced the Buckeyes with 29 assists while adding eight digs. Wetzel topped both teams with nine.
Cole Young reached 700 kills and 300 assist blocks in the victory.
Thomas Leahey reached 500 career kills with four, including the final of the match.
Set 1 (OSU, 25-21)
The Hawks started quickly with a 4-0 lead before a pair of Shane Wetzel kills made it 4-2. A setter kill by Ohio State's Daniel Henwood Rodriguez tied it at 5-all. A Wetzel kill put Ohio State in the lead for the first time at 7-6. A pair of Wetzel kills from the right side upped the lead to 9-7. Kyle Teune got the Buckeyes to double digits with a kill for a 10-8 lead. Ohio State maintained an edge and built the lead with another kill by Wetzel, the reigning AVCA National Player of the Week. Quincy called timeout after a Cole Young kill gave the Buckeyes a 14-10 advantage. The Hawks used a 4-1 run after the break to make it 15-14 Buckeyes. The Hawks called their final timeout after kills by Wetzel and Stanislaw Chacinski made it 18-15. A Teune drop shot from the left side made it 19-16 after a long rally. The Buckeyes continued to score to finish off the set, 25-21 after kills by Teune and Wetzel, his 10th of the match. The Buckeyes hit .471 in the opener with Wetzel hitting .600 on 15 swings. Set 2 (OSU, 25-19)
Young opened the second set with a kill, the 700th in his career. Ohio State went up 5-3 on kills by Chacinski and Wetzel. The Buckeyes did not give up the lead in building an 11-7 lead on another Wetzel kills and a Teune ace. Another ace by Young led to a Quincy timeout with the Buckeyes leading 13-8. The Hawks called their second timeout of the set after a Teune kill and Thomas Leahey ace made it 17-11 Buckeyes. Ohio State called timeout after the Hawks used a 4-2 run to make it 19-15 Buckeyes. The lead grew to six, 22-16, after a Teune kill and Quincy attack error. Owen Pickering and Wetzel kills got the win for the Buckeyes, 25-19. Wetzel reached 15 kills in the win. Set 3 (OSU, 25-18) Â
Ohio State again started strong with a 5-2 advantage before the Hawks cut it to 7-6 Ohio State. The Buckeyes did not give up the lead and went up 10-7 on a pair of Young rockets from the middle. The cushion increased to 12-8 after a pair of Quincy errors. A third Hawks error led to a Quincy timeout down 13-8. Consecutive errors by the Hawks upped Ohio State's lead to 18-11 prompting Quincy's final timeout of the set. Wetzel went back-to-back with kills for a 22-14 lead.
