Buckeyes Fall to Rutgers in Series Finale

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State baseball team (11-30, 3-18 Big Ten) lost game three in its series against Rutgers (20-25, 9-12 Big Ten), 13-5, on Sunday.

Game Recap

In the bottom of the first inning, Trey Lipsey drew a leadoff walk, followed by a Matthew Graveline double to left center, putting both runners into scoring position. Tyler Pettorini hit a two-RBI single up the middle to give the Buckeyes the lead, 2-0.
The Scarlet Knights plated two runs in the top of the second to even the game, 2-2.
With two outs in the bottom of the second inning, Reggie Bussey hit a triple to left field. Lipsey then drew a walk to put runners on the corners. Graveline followed with a double down the left field line, sending both runners home to reclaim the lead for the Buckeyes, 4-2.
Rutgers added another run in the top of the third inning to cut the Buckeye lead to one, 4-3.
In the top of the fourth inning, the Scarlet Knights once again evened the score, 4-4.
A fielding error and an RBI single in the top of the fifth added two more runs for the Scarlet Knights and put them ahead of the Buckeyes, 6-4.
The Scarlet Knights had a two-RBI double in the top of the sixth to extend their lead to four, 8-4.
Rutgers further extended the lead in the top of the eighth inning, 10-4.
In the bottom of the eighth inning, pinch hitter Anthony Scheppler drew a walk then Bussey hit a single to center field. With two outs, Graveline hit an RBI single to center field, cutting the lead to five, 10-5.
Rutgers got three more runs across in the top of the ninth to take an eight-run lead, 13-5.
The Buckeyes were retired in order in the bottom of the ninth as the Scarlet Knights came away with the win.

Buckeyes by the Numbers

Graveline led the team with three hits and three RBIs.
Starter Gavin Kuzniewski (3-4) took the loss on the mound. He struck out three and gave up six runs on eight hits in 4.2 innings pitched.
Zak Sigman had a career-high five strikeouts while facing 12 batters and only allowing one hit in 2.1 innings pitched.
