No. 9 Ohio State Heads to California for Big Ten Tournament

No. 2 seed Buckeyes open play in quarterfinals Thursday
COLUMBUS, Ohio – The No. 9-ranked Ohio State women's tennis team is headed to Ojai, Calif., to compete in the 2025 Big Ten Tournament. The tournament will be hosted by the Ojai Valley Tennis Club at Libbey Park.Â
The Buckeyes (18-3, 12-1 B1G) earned the No. 2 seed, giving them a bye for the first round. Ohio State will first play in the quarterfinals at 6 p.m. ET Thursday against the winner of a match between No. 7 seed Illinois and No. 10 seed Northwestern. The quarterfinal winner will play a semifinal match at 6 p.m. ET Friday and the final will be at 8 p.m. ET Saturday.

- The Buckeyes have three B1G Tournament titles, winning in 2016, 2017 and 2021.
- This is the third year in a row the Buckeyes are the No. 2 seed. The squad has been among the Top 4 seeds each tournament since 2014.
- In the tournament last season, Ohio State posted wins against Penn State (4-1) and Northwestern (4-1) before falling to Michigan in the final (2-4).Â
- All-time, the Buckeyes have reached the championship match of the Big Ten Tournament eight times (2004, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2021, 2022, 2023, 2024).
- Ohio State recorded wins over both possible quarterfinal opponents, Illinois (4-1) and Northwestern (4-0), on the road this season.

- With the addition of the four west coast teams to the Big Ten this year, the tournament format was changed and the Top 12 teams earn a spot in the tourney. The tournament starts with four first round matches and the Top 4 seeds earn a bye into the quarterfinals. Michigan is the No. 1 seed, with Ohio State No. 2, Washington No. 3 and UCLA No. 4.

- Four Buckeyes are in the newest singles rankings: No. 10 Luciana Perry, No. 30 Teah Chavez, No. 94 Sydni Ratliff and No. 99 Audrey Spencer.
- In doubles, the duo of Perry and Chavez is No. 19.
- Ohio State concluded the regular season with an 18-3 record and was 12-1 in B1G play. The team shut out seven teams in B1G action, with its one league loss to regular season champion Michigan.
- The Buckeyes last competed over the weekend in Columbus, securing a 4-0 win over Wisconsin and a 4-1 victory against Minnesota to close out the regular season.
- Luciana Perry has the most overall singles wins for the Buckeyes with 28. Nao Nishino and Shelly Bereznyak are tied for second with 24 each. In dual play, Perry is 14-3, Bereznyak is 13-3, Nishino is 12-2 and Teah Chavez is 10-1.
- Perry was 9-1 in Big Ten matches, with Sydni Ratliff undefeated at 8-0 and Bereznyak 8-1.
- The duo of Chavez and Perry is 12-5 in doubles matches this spring to lead Ohio State. The tandem of Spencer and Nishino is 11-2.Â
- Courts two and five saw the best record so far this season with a 15-1 ledger on court two and an 11-1 record on court five.
- Ohio State has won the doubles point in 15 of 21 matches this spring.
- The Buckeyes are 10-1 at home this year after closing the regular season with a three-match homestand.
- Melissa Schaub, in her 13th year as head coach of the Buckeyes, is 258-84 in her career, the Buckeyes' all-time leader in coaching wins.Â
- Eight Buckeyes were recognized as Ohio State Scholar-Athletes earlier this month – Alessia Cau, Spencer, Dani Schoenly, Megan Basil, Nishino, Bereznyak, Ratliff and Chavez.Â
- Ratliff was also the recipient of a Woody and Anne Hayes Award for postgraduate studies at the Scarlet and Graymies Awards.Â
- The NCAA field will be announced at 5 p.m. Monday on NCAA.com.
- The first and second rounds will take place May 2-4 with the Top 16 seeds as host sites. The super regional round is May 9-10 on campus sites.
- The final three rounds will be held May 15-18 at the Hurd Tennis Center in Waco, Texas.
