Buckeyes set the Big Ten single season record for home runs
ATHENS, Ohio – After making history last weekend against Michigan, the Ohio State softball team (38-10-1) kept setting milestones on Tuesday afternoon in Athens, as the Buckeyes hit four home runs – including the Big Ten record 119th of the season – en route to a 15-5 five-inning victory.
Kami Kortokrax was the offense star of the game, going 3-for-4 with three home runs and five RBI. She became the fourth player in program history – and second in the last nine days – to hit three home runs in a game. Teammate Reagan Millken, who hit three home runs last Sunday at Penn State, also went 3-for-4 with a home run and five RBI.
The Buckeyes, who came into the day with 118 home runs on the season, set the single-season Big Ten record in the second inning on a two-run homer by senior Kaitlyn Farley. The hit broke a 10-year old record set by Michigan in 2015. Ohio State will enter its series this weekend vs. Purdue with 123 long balls on the season.
Freshman Layna Gerhard got the start in the circle and improved to 7-0 on the year. She scattered two hits over three innings and had one strikeout.
How It Happened
- Ohio manufactured a run in the bottom of the second inning via walk, double and sacrifice fly to left field. The Buckeyes avoided further damage by getting the final batter of the inning to ground out.
- The history-making home run came one batter into the second inning. Sami Bewick worked a walk to lead off the inning, and then Farley deposited Ohio State's 119th home run of the season over the left centerfield wall just one pitch later. The hit also gave Ohio State its first lead of the day at 2-1.
- In back to back at-bats, Reagan Milliken and Kami Kortokrax delivered run-scoring hits to give Ohio State a four-run lead in the third inning. Millken's RBI single scored Hadley Parisien, who singled to lead off the inning. Next, Kortokrax hit the Buckeyes' second home run of the day – a two-run shot over the left centerfield fence – to make the score 5-1.
- Hailey Lang drove in two runs with an RBI single to right field that upped Ohio State's lead to 7-1, and Taylor Curse plated the final run of the inning with a single to second base. In all, Ohio State scored six runs on five hits in the inning.
- Ohio State's third and fourth home runs of the evening came in the top of the fourth inning and resulted in a 11-3 Buckeye lead. They came back-to-back off the bats of Milliken and Kortokrax.
- Kortokrax's third home run of the day came in the top of the fifth inning and it was hit to nearly the exact same spot as her second. Her bomb was preceded by a two-run single by Milliken.
Buckeye This and That
- Kortokrax's third-inning home run was the 33rd long ball of her career and also her 200th career hit in her 206th consecutive game played. She'd add her 34th and 35th career homers in the fourth and fifth innings, respectively. She's two home runs shy of tying Alex Bayne for eighth place in program history.
- Tuesday's game was the final midweek non-conference game on the Buckeyes' regular season schedule. Ohio State finished 9-1 in midweeks this season and have outscored opponents 97-28 in those 10 games.
- Freshman Kassandra Gewecke worked a perfect 1-2-3 inning in the fourth, getting a strikeout and back-to-back groundouts that retired the Bobcats in order. She also pitched in the fifth inning.
