Game Recap
- The Spartans got on the board first, taking a 1-0 lead after an RBI single in the bottom of the first inning.
- Maddix Simpson had the first hit of the day for the Buckeyes with a lead-off single in the top of the third inning.
- Michigan State added two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning after an RBI single and an RBI double to extend its lead, 3-0.
- In the bottom of the fifth, a two-run home run put the Spartans ahead of the Buckeyes, 5-0, and in the bottom of the sixth, a lead-off solo home run and a score on a groundout extended their lead, 7-0.
- Matthew Graveline led off with a double to left center in the top of the seventh inning and he advanced to third base on a Mason Eckelman groundout. Graveline scored on a wild pitch to put the Buckeyes on the board and cut the Spartan lead to six, 7-1.
- The Spartans got back ahead by seven, 8-1, with a solo home run in the bottom of the seventh frame.
- In the top of the eighth, Trey Lipsey led off with a single through the right side, followed by a single through the left side from Lee Ellis. Tyler Pettorini then reached base on a fielder's choice and Lipsey advanced to third to put runners on the corners. With two outs, Graveline stepped up to the plate and he went yard, sending one 397 feet over the wall in right center to send in three runs and cut the Spartan lead to four, 8-4.
- Michigan State, however, got three more runs across in the bottom of the eighth to take back a seven-run lead, 11-4.
- The Buckeyes were retired in order in the top of the ninth as Michigan State came away with the 11-4 win to open the series.
- Graveline led the Buckeyes with two hits and three RBIs. His home run was his eighth of the season, which is second-most on the team behind Pettorini, who has 10.
- Drew Erdmann (0-5) took the loss on the mound. He struck out four, tying his season-high, and allowed three runs on seven hits in 4.0 innings pitched.
- Ryan Butler fanned five, tying his season-high, and gave up eight runs on 10 hits in 4.0 relief innings.
- The Buckeyes and Spartans continue their series Saturday, April 19-Sunday, April 20. Saturday's first pitch is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. and Sunday's game will begin at 1:00 p.m.
