
Ohio State Wins Weekend Series Against Valparaiso

Game Recap
- The Buckeyes got on the board in the bottom of the second inning. Mason Eckelman led off with a double to left field. Nick Giamarusti reached base on a fielder's choice and then stole second. A double to left center from Will Carpenter sent Giamarusti home to give the Buckeyes a 1-0 lead. Maddix Simpson was next at the dish, and he singled up the middle, scoring Carpenter to put Ohio State ahead, 2-0.
- In the top of the third inning, starter Jake Michalak fanned three of four faced, catching two batters swinging and one looking.
- Lee Ellis walked to lead off the bottom of the third inning. He stole second and then advanced to third on a passed ball. A sac fly from Matthew Graveline plated Ellis to give Ohio State a 3-0 lead over the Beacons.
- Valpo got one run across in the top of the fourth inning on an RBI single to cut the Buckeye lead to two, 3-1.
- In the bottom of the seventh, Ellis led off with a double to left field. Tyler Pettorini was next up, and he went yard, sending the ball 407 feet out of the park over the wall in right center to extend the Ohio State lead, 5-1. Next in the order was Graveline, and he also sent one out of the park, hitting a solo home run 391 feet over the left field wall to put the Buckeyes up, 6-1, over Valpo.
- Ohio State added two more runs in the bottom of the eighth inning courtesy of an RBI single from Pettorini, who scored the second run on a wild pitch to put the Buckeyes ahead by seven, 8-1.
- With two outs on the board in the top of the ninth, Valpo got two runs across on a two-RBI double to cut the Buckeye lead to five, 8-3, but Ohio State got the final out of the game to earn the win.
- Michalak (1-1) had a phenomenal day on the mound, earning his first win of the season. He struck out a career-high 10 batters in 6.0 innings pitched, which is also a career-high. He allowed one run on five hits.
- Lipsey led the Buckeyes in hits with three. Ellis, Pettorini and Eckelman each had two hits.
- Pettorini had a team-high three RBIs and Graveline batted in two runs.
- Lipsey had two stolen bases on the day.
- The Buckeyes host Eastern Michigan on Tuesday, March 9 at 3:00 p.m. before opening Big Ten play with a three-game series at Indiana March 14-16.
