Buckeye Bats Hot in 13-7 Victory Over Eastern Michigan

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State baseball team (5-9) won its third straight game, defeating Eastern Michigan (7-7), 13-7, at Bill Davis Stadium on Tuesday. The Buckeyes had a season-high 16 hits.

- In the bottom of the first, Trey Lipsey led off with a double to right center field and he advanced to third on a groundout. Pettorini stepped up to the dish next and he went yard, sending the ball 400 feet over the wall in right center to drive in two runs and give the Buckeyes the lead. Matthew Graveline and Mason Eckelman hit back-to-back to singles. Nick Giamarusti reached on a fielder's choice and Graveline advanced to third. Graveline and Giamarusti then executed a double steal, with Graveline stealing home to give the Buckeyes a 3-0 lead over the Eagles.
- With two outs on the board in the bottom of the second, Lipsey walked, followed by a single from Lee Ellis. Pettorini then doubled down the left field line, sending both runners home to extend the Ohio State lead, 5-0. A single from Graveline scored Pettorini to give the Buckeyes a 6-0 advantage. Eckelman walked and Giamarusti was hit by a pitch to load the bases. A single from Will Carpenter sent two runs home and put the Buckeyes in the lead, 8-0.
- The Eagles got on the board in the top of the third, scoring two runs to cut the Buckeye lead to six, 8-2.
- Reggie Bussey singled to second base to lead off the bottom of the third, then stole second. Lipsey then singled to first, advancing Lipsey, and then he also stole second to put two runners in scoring position. A sac fly from Ellis sent Bussey home and Lipsey scored on a wild pitch to extend the Ohio State lead, 10-2.
- In the top of the fourth, Eastern Michigan scored twice, but the Buckeyes maintained the lead, 10-4.
- Carpenter led off with a single in the bottom of the fourth. Maddix Simpson was walked, and Carpenter and Simpson successfully executed a double steal to get into scoring position. Bussey drew a walk to load the bases. Ellis walked to plate Carpenter and give the Buckeyes a seven-run lead, 11-4.
- With bases loaded in the bottom of the fifth, Bussey was walked to send in another run for the Buckeyes and extend the lead, 12-4.
- In the top of the sixth, the Eagles scored three runs to come within four runs of Ohio State, 11-7.
- In the bottom of the eighth inning, a sac fly from Graveline sent Ellis home and gave the Buckeyes a 13-7 lead.
- Hunter Shaw fanned three of four faced in the top of the ninth to cement the victory for the Buckeyes.
- Pettorini led the Buckeyes with four hits, tying his career-high. He also had a team-high four RBIs.
- Lipsey, Ellis, Graveline, Eckelman, Carpenter and Bussey each had two hits.
- Carpenter led the Buckeyes with two stolen bases, which is a career-high.
- Gavin Kuzniewski (2-1) made his first collegiate start on the mound and earned the win. He gave up two earned runs on three hits in 3.0 innings pitched.
- Shaw fanned four in 2.0 innings to close out the game.
- The Buckeyes head to Indiana to open Big Ten play March 14-16.
