
No. 17 Ohio State Fall in Four Sets at No. 8 Loyola

COLUMBUS, Ohio – No. 17 Ohio State had its five-match winning streak snapped by Loyola of Chicago Saturday on the road, dropping a match to the No. 8 ranked team in the country in four sets, 21-25, 25-19, 26-24 and 25-22. Ohio State is now 11-9 on the year and 6-4 in the MIVA while Loyla improves to 16-2 and 8-2, respectively.
The Buckeyes had 48 kills, led by 18 from Stanislaw Chacinski and 13 from Shane Wetzel, and Loyola had 57. Ohio State also had 14 assist errors and 14 service errors, compared to nine and 11 for the Ramblers. Ohio State led in digs, 10-3, while Loyola held a 10-3 margin in blocks.
Daniel Henwood Rodrigues had 38 assists.
Set 1
Ohio State never trailed in the first set and won it, 25-21, behind a .571 hitting percentage. The Buckeyes jumped out to a quick 4-1 lead and never lost the lead, although the Ramblers were within one of the Buckeye lead four times late in the set. Stanislaw Chacinski had a kill – his fifth of the set – to give the Buckeyes set point and he closed the set out with a service ace.
Set 2
Ohio led through the first 29 points after an early 1-all tie, but Loyola went on an 8-3 run midway through the set to build a 20-17 lead and went on to even the match at 1-all with a 25-19 win. Ohio State hit .435 for the set while the Ramblers improved from their first set percentage of .364 by hitting .500 in the second set. The Ramblers also had 16 kills in the set compared with 12 for the Buckeyes.
Set 3
Aside from one tie at 1-1, Ohio led through the first 20 points of the set before Loyola grabbed a brief, 11-10, lead. Ohio State battled back to retake the lead at 13-12, but the teams stayed even with ties at 14-all and 15-all. A mini-run for the Buckeyes, including a service ace by Daniel Henwood Rodrigues, gave Ohio State an 18-15 lead and forced a Loyola timeout. Back-to-back service errors by the Ramblers kept the Buckeyes in front by three by just like that, Loyola went on a 6-3 run to tie the score at 24. Back-to-back Buckeye attack errors then handed the second set to the home team, 26-24. The Buckeyes hit just .231 in the set.
Set 4
A highly competitive and even fourth set that featured 22 ties or lead changes ultimately swung in the direction of the home team, 25-22. Ohio State hit just .231 in the set again while Loyola was hot again, hitting at a .560 rate.
