No. 14 Ohio State Drops MIVA Opener to No. 7 Loyola Chicago

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- No. 13 Ohio State (3-6) fell in four hard-fought sets to No. 7 Loyola Chicago (10-0) 3-1 in the Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association opener for the Buckeyes Saturday at the Covelli Center.

The Buckeyes lost by scores 25-21, 20-25, 25-27, 21-25.

Junior outside Shane Wetzel led the Ohio State offense with 23 kills. Freshman setter Daniel Henwood Rodriguez recorded 40 assists and a season high 10 digs. Senior Kyle Teune also added a double-double with 11 kills and 10 digs. Â

Set 1 (OSU, 25-21)
The Buckeye offense started the match hot, jumping to a 3-1 advantage after three kills from Kyle Teune, an Illinois native. Loyola Chicago tied it up at 6-all following kills from Nicodemus Meyer and Jake Read, but the Buckeyes went on a 4-1 run to lift the score to 10-7. The Ramblers then scored three-consecutive points to tie it at 10-all. The teams then went back-and-forth, with Ohio State leading 15-14 heading into a media timeout. Coming out of the break, the Ramblers kept it close, but took their first timeout of the match after a kill from Stanislaw Chacinski gave the Buckeyes a 19-17 advantage. An Ohio State service error and a kill from Nicodemus brought Loyola Chicago back within one, forcing the Buckeyes to take a timeout leading 20-19. After the break, the Scarlet and Gray outscored the Ramblers 3-1, pushing Loyola into its second and final timeout of the set trailing 23-20. Another kill from Teune and an ace from Chacinski gave the Buckeyes the set 25-21 and a 1-0 advantage in the match. Chacinski led Ohio State's offense with six kills with Teune and Shane Wetzel following closely at five each.Â

Loyola Chicago took a 3-1 lead to start the second set, but the Buckeyes tied it back up at 5-all after a kill from Chacinski. The Ramblers then scored three-consecutive points to take an 8-5 advantage. The Buckeyes brought it back within one, trailing 8-7 until Loyola went on a 4-1 run to lift the score to 12-8 and force Ohio State into its first timeout of the set. Loyola Chicago kept a steady lead after the break, but a block from Thomas Leahey closed the gap to 15-14 Ramblers. Loyola then outscored Ohio State 4-1 to take a 19-15 lead, forcing the Buckeyes into their second and final timeout. After the huddle, the Ramblers took their biggest lead of the set at 23-16 following a Buckeye attack error and an ace from Ryan McElligott. The Scarlet and Gray survived two Rambler set points, bringing the score to 24-19 when Loyola took its first timeout. The Buckeyes scored out of the timeout, but a kill from Parker Van Buren gave the Ramblers the set 25-20 and tied the match 1-all.

The third set started back-and-forth, with neither team able to gain more than a two-point advantage until a Buckeye attack error gave the Ramblers a 5-2 lead. Ohio State then scored three-consecutive points to tie it at 5-all following a Cole Young ace. Loyola answered, rattling off another three points to take the score to 8-5, but the Buckeyes tied it back at 9-all after a kill from Wetzel. The Ramblers then went on a 6-2 run, taking their advantage to 15-11 heading into a media timeout. After the huddle, the Buckeyes went on a 5-1 bout to tie it at 16-all, forcing the Ramblers into their first timeout of the set. The score was back-and-forth after the break, but a kill from Wetzel put the Buckeyes up 19-18 and Loyola took their final timeout. Neither team could score consecutively out of the huddle until Loyola took a 23-22 lead following a kill from Aidan Klein, forcing a Buckeye timeout. A Rambler service error tied it at 23-all, but another kill from Klein gave Loyola their first set point of the match at 24-23, pushing Ohio State into taking its final timeout of the set. A kill from Chacinski tied it at 24-all. After another tie at 25-all, the Ramblers scored consecutively to take the set 27-25 and a 2-1 lead in the match.

Coming out of the huddle, Loyola kept a steady edge, taking a 21-19 lead following a Van Buren kill. Another kill from Klein gave the Ramblers a 23-20 advantage, then a kill from Van Buren and a Rambler block gave them the set 25-21 and the match 3-1.
