Buckeyes return to Columbus to take on Lindenwood Saturday at Covelli (1 p.m.)
COLUMBUS, Ohio -- No. 15 Ohio State (4-6, 1-1) swept Purdue Fort Wayne (5-4, 0-2) for the first league win for the Buckeyes in the Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association road Monday at the Gates Sports Center in Fort Wayne, Indiana. Â Â
The Buckeyes won by scores of 25-19, 26-24, 25-21.
Shane Wetzel led the Buckeyes with 13 kills with Stanislaw Chacinski adding 11. Wetzel also added four aces, five digs and three blocks in the win.
Daniel Henwood Rodriguez contributed 26 assist to lead both teams.
Senior Cole Young was credited with three assist blocks to move into the No. 15 spot all-time at Ohio State with 265. Â
Set 1 (OSU, 25-19)
Shane Wetzel got the Buckeyes out of the gates with a kill to open the match. Kills by Kyle Teune and another by Wetzel followed by a block combo by Stanislaw Chacinski and Cole Young made it 5-2 Buckeyes. Another Wetzel kill and a Wetzel/Thomas Leahey block led to a Mastodons timeout with Ohio State leading 9-5. The Buckeyes scored twice after the break to make it a six-point lead (11-5). Wetzel started 5-for-5 in the set while the Buckeyes built a 15-8 advantage. Purdue Fort Wayne then called its final timeout. The Buckeyes went on a 3-0 run after the break but the Mastodons countered with a 5-0 point streak to make it 18-13 Ohio State. The Buckeyes scored the next three behind a couple Teune kills to take a 21-13 lead. A pair of kills by Chacinski earned Ohio State the win in the set, 25-19. The Buckeyes hit .353 in the opener with Wetzel leading the way with five kills on seven swings. Set 2 (OSU, 26-24)
The set started as a back-and-forth affair before the Mastodons used a 3-1 run to take an 11-9 lead. A pair of kills by Chacinski and another by Leahey put the Buckeyes back on top 12-11 after a 3-0 run. Wetzel extended the streak with a kill before a Purdue Fort Wayne error made it 14-11 Buckeyes after a 5-0 run. The Mastodons called their first timeout of the set before another Chacinski kill made it 15-11. Once again the teams began to trade points until a Chacinski ace after a Leahey kill put the Buckeyes up 18-13. A 4-1 Mastodon run cut it to 19-17 Buckeyes. Teune took the Buckeyes to a 20-17 lead. Purdue Fort Wayne closed to 23-22 Buckeyes with a 3-1 run before calling its first timeout. An Ohio State error after the stoppage tied it at 23-all. Wetzel countered with a kill before a Mastodon timeout. Ohio State then got the win after a Mastodon error and a triple Buckeye block by Teune, Young and Wetzel for a 26-24 win. Set 3 (OSU, 25-21)
Three-consecutive Wetzel aces gave the Buckeyes a 5-1 lead early. Wetzel's 10th kill followed by Chacinski's ninth put the Buckeyes up 8-4. The Mastodons called its first timeout after a 5-1 by the Buckeyes upped the lead to 11-5. Young capped a 3-1 run to push the lead to 15-9. Purdue Fort Wayne used a 4-1 run to cut the Ohio State lead to 16-12. Ohio State used a 5-1 run, leading to a Mastodon timeout, to take a 19-3 advantage. Chacinski reached 10 kills on the night with a blast to put Ohio State up 20-15. Teune added a couple kills to his total to up the advantage to 22-16. The Buckeyes then took the set, 25-21, and the match, 3-1, on a Chacinski kill.
