
Perry Earns All-America Honors at NCAA Championships

Junoir reached Round of 16 for third straight year
COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The NCAA women's tennis singles championships are underway this week at the USTA National Campus in Orlando, Fla. Wednesday, Buckeye junior Luciana Perry advanced to the Round of 16, earning All-America accolades for the third straight year. She will take on No. 2 seed Carmen Andreea Herea of Texas in the third round Thursday.Â

Perry, who won her first two matches in three sets, is the Buckeyes' second three-time singles All-American and the first to earn the honor three times by reaching the NCAA Round of 16. Last year she was the first in school history to advance to the the NCAA Round of 16 twice, extending the mark to three this year. She is the third Buckeye to earn multiple singles All-America accolades. Irina Cantos Siemers was a three-time honoree (2021, '22, '24) and Francesca Di Lorenzo earned singles honors in 2016 and '17 and doubles accolades as well in 2017. Kristy Dascoli garnered singles and doubles honors in 2001. All-time, six Buckeyes have earned at least one All-America laurel in singles. The current criteria for ITA All-America singles honors include winning the ITA All-American Championship, advancing to the round of 16 at the NCAA Championships or finishing in the top 20 of the final ITA singles rankings.
Teah Chavez and Nao Nishino also represented the Buckeyes in the 64-player draw this year, with both falling in the first round.Â
Round Two (Wednesday)
Luciana Perry, a No. 9-16 seed, prevailed in three sets against Charlotte's Ni Xi to advance to the Round of 16. Perry rolled to a 6-0 win in the first set but lost the second set, 6-1. In the third, the Buckeye jumped out to a 5-0 lead en route to a 6-1 victory..
In the next round, Perry will face No. 2 seed Carmen Andreea Herea, who posted a 6-3., 7-5 win in the Round of 32 Wednesday.
Round One (Tuesday)
Luciana Perry, a No. 9-16 seed, came from a set down to defeat Penn's Esha Velaga. In the first set, the Quaker jumped out to a 4-1 lead and Perry was unable to get back on serve, falling 6-4. The Buckeye two-time All-American dropped just three games the rest of the way. She opened the second set with a 4-0 lead en route to a 6-1 win. In the third set, after four consecutive holds, Perry broke for a 3-2 advantage and did not drop another game for a 6-2 victory.
In one of the first matches of the day, No. 7 seed Teah Chavez fell to Vanderbilt's Valeria Ray. In the first set, Chavez had an early break for a 3-2 lead, but the Quaker won four of the next five games to take the set, 6-4. In the second set, after the players traded breaks, Ray won three games in a row for a 4-1 lead. Chavez drew within 3-4, but a hold and a break gave Ray the win, 6-3.
 Nishino dropped her match against NC State's Mia Slama in straight sets. Nishino was up 2-0 before Slama went on a six-game run to close out the first set, 6-2. Slama extended her streak to the first three games of the second set. Nishino won two of the next three for a 4-2 score but a break on the deciding point put Slama up 5-2 and she served it out to advance.
