Buckeyes remain in Texas to face No. 1 UCLA Saturday

The Buckeyes fell by scores of 19-25, 14-25, 20-25.

Junior Shane Wetzel and freshman Stanislaw Chacinski each had four kills to lead the Ohio State's effort.

The Buckeyes used three setters with both graduate Kohl Kutsch and freshman Daniel Henwood Rodriguez leading the team with nine assists each. Â

Set 1 (19-15)
Shane Wetzel opened with a kill followed by a Thomas Leahey ace for a 2-0 lead. After an Ohio State error, Daniel Hurley put the Buckeyes up 3-1 with a kill. The Cardinal took a 4-3 lead with a 3-0 run. Stanford went up 7-5 before Ohio State reclaimed the lead with a 4-0 run for a 9-7 edge. A Wetzel kill kept the Buckeyes on top at 10-8. A 4-1 run by the Cardinal put Stanford back in the lead at 11-10. The Cardinal went to the media timeout with a 15-14 lead and extended their advantage to 17-14 after the break. The Buckeyes called timeout when Stanford went up 19-15 after a 5-1 run. The Cardinal did not relent the rest of the way to claim the first set, 25-19.

Set 2 (14-25)
A Leahey kill put the Buckeyes up 2-1 early. The Cardinal scored the next four points for a 5-2 lead. Stanford went up 8-4 before an Ohio State timeout. The Cardinal completed a 4-0 run around the break for a 10-4 advantage. The Buckeyes called their final timeout of the set with Stanford leading 17-9. The Cardinal maintained their momentum after the stoppage in taking a 20-9 lead following a 6-0 run. Stanford finished off the set to win 25-14.

Set 3 (20-25)
The Buckeyes started with a 2-1 lead after a Cole Young kill. Stanford scored the next three for a 4-2 advantage. A Hurley kill made it 5-4 in favor of the Cardinal. The teams traded points until the Cardinal used a 3-1 run for a 9-6 lead. The Buckeyes used a 4-1 run with defense to tie it at 10-all before Kyle Teune and Jack O'Riordan kills put the Buckeyes in the lead at 12-10. The 5-0 run for the Buckeyes led to a Stanford timeout. The Cardinal tied it at 15-all before taking a 16-15 advantage. Kills by Leahey and Tyler Tharpe tied it at 17-all. The Buckeyes called timeout after Stanford went up 19-17. The Buckeyes remained within striking distance the rest of the way but could not take the lead in dropping the set 25-20 and the match 3-0.

Ohio State will play its second match at the Austin Convention Center Saturday in the First Point Collegiate Challenge when the Buckeyes face No. 1 UCLA (2-0) at 8 p.m. (ESPN+). The Bruins defeated No. 14 Penn State Friday, 3-0.
