Young Perfect, No. 11 Buckeyes Sweep Fort Valley State

The Buckeyes won by scores of 25-13, 25-18, 25-16.
Stanislaw Chacinski and Cole Young paced the Buckeyes with 10 kills each. Shane Wetzel added nine with Jack O'Riordan contributing eight.
Young hit 1.000 with 10 kills on 10 swings to tie an Ohio State record for hitting percentage in a match. The last Buckeye to end a match with 10 or more kills without an error was Ethan Talley with a 10-0-10 effort March 1, 2019 at home against McKendree in a 3-1 win.

Kohl Kutsch started at setter and led both teams with 36 assists. He also tied for the team lead with Wetzel with five digs.
How it Happened
Set 1 (25-13)
Stanislaw Chacinski started the match with a pair of aces to help the Buckeyes to a quick 3-0 lead. The Wildcats made it 4-3 Buckeyes before Ohio State went on a 6-1 run to make it 10-4. Another run of 4-1 put the Buckeyes in the lead at 14-5. After a media timeout with OSU up 15-7, the Buckeyes scored the first three after the break for an 18-7 lead. FVS went on a 3-1 run to make it 19-10. Jack O'Riordan and Cole Young combined on a block after a Thomas Leahey kill to put Ohio State up 21-10. The Wildcats called timeout. The Buckeyes closed out the set on a 4-3 run to win 25-13. Shane Wetzel led Ohio State with five kills. Ohio State hit. .375 while the Wildcats were in the negative at -.167.

Set 2 (25-18)
The Wildcats opened with a 2-0 lead before a Wetzel kill and Leahey ace evened the score at 2-all. O'Riordan buried an overpass and added another kill for a 4-2 lead. FVS tied it at 5-all with a 3-1 run. Young capped an Ohio State 3-1 run with a kill for an 8-6 lead. The Wildcats countered with a 3-0 run to take the lead at 9-8. A Chacinski kill put the Buckeyes back in the lead at 11-10. Ohio State led 15-13 at the media timeout after a Chacinski kill. FVS called timeout following a 3-0 Ohio State run that put the Buckeyes up 19-15. O'Riordan registered a back-row kill for a 20-16 lead. The Buckeyes scored five of the next seven to win the set 25-18. Wetzel led with eight kills after two sets with Young and O'Riordan each with seven. Ohio State hit .538 in the set.

Set 3 (25-16)
Ohio State started with a 4-1 lead. Kills by Young and Chacinski upped the lead to 6-2. The Buckeyes led by at least three until the Wildcats used a 4-1 run to make it 13-11. Ohio State led 15-11 at the media timeout and increased the lead to 17-11 after an O'Riordan block and Tyler Tharp ace. A Young kill put Ohio State up 18-13 and it marked his 10th kill of the match on 10 attempts. A kill by Tharpe followed by a Tharpe/Hudson Harris block made it 23-15. Harris added a kill and with a Wildcats error, the Buckeyes took the set 26-16 and the match 3-1.

The Buckeyes take to the road for the first time this season for neutral-site contests against No. 13 Stanford and No. 1 UCLA Jan. 17-18 at the Austin (Texas) Convention Center. The matches are part of the First Point Collegiate Challenge. The match against the Cardinal tip at 8 p.m. Jan. 17. The Bruins and Buckeyes are set for 8 p.m. Jan. 18. Both contests will be streamed by ESPN+.
