
No. 8 Ohio State Tops Richmond, 2-0, to Remain Unbeaten

Buckeyes registers their third consecutive shutout and improve to 5-0 on the season
COLUMBUS, Ohio – The eight-ranked Ohio State field hockey team began its weekend trip in Virginia by defeating Richmond, 2-0, on Friday afternoon at Crenshaw Field in Richmond, Va. The Buckeyes remained undefeated on the season, improving to 5-0 while also registering their third consecutive shutout. Richmond is 3-2 on the year.
How It Happened
The Buckeyes got on the board quickly, scoring twice in the first six minutes of the first quarter and then made those goals stand up, as goalie Abby Danson made two saves and the defense in front of her limited the Spiders to just seven total shots on the afternoon.
Danson and the Ohio State defense, with consists of backs Katie Fichtner, Erin Little and Sarah Richards, have not allowed a goal in 13 quarters – and over 195 minutes of game action. That includes the fourth quarter of a 4-1 win over Bucknell and shutouts of Colgate, Syracuse and now Richmond.
How The Goals Were Scored
- Ohio State's high-scoring offense got off to another fast start on Friday. Fitchner scored less than five minutes into the first quarter when she converted a penalty corner and ripped a shot into the back right corner of the cage. It was Fichtner's second goal of the season. Makenna Webster and Claudia Thomas were credited with assists on the play.
- Less than three minutes later, a transition opportunity for the Buckeyes was converted by sophomore Emily Barker, who scored her first collegiate points. The goal gave Ohio State a 2-0 lead with 9:20 remaining in the opening quarter.
Buckeye This and That
- Ohio State is off to a 5-0 start for the second consecutive season and is 15-2 in games played in August and September since the start of last season.
- Friday's game was the first between Ohio State and Richmond in 13 years. The two teams last played on Sept. 3, 2011 – a 2-1 overtime win for the Buckeyes in Harrisonburg, Va.
- The Buckeyes now lead the all-time series against Richmond 5-0-1. All six of the games have occurred either in Richmond, Va. or at neutral sites.
- Friday's game featured two of the nation's top three scorers: Webster and Richmond's Clara Larripa entered this weekend averaging 3.5 points per game – good for No. 2 nationally.
- The Buckeyes generated 12 penalty corner opportunities – the third time in five games that they've had double figures in that category. For the season, Ohio State has a 45-17 edge over its opponents in corners.
- Ohio State entered Friday's game as the nation's leader in scoring offense (4.50 goals per game), scoring average and scoring margin (+4.50). It's won four of its five games by at least three goals.
- The Buckeyes last recorded three consecutive shutouts when it began the 2022 season with wins over Northeastern (4-0), UAlbany (3-0) and Lehigh (4-0).
