Ohio State starts the year at 6-0 for the first time since the 2006 season
COLUMBUS, Ohio – The No. 8 Ohio State Buckeyes (6-0) protected their undefeated record on Sunday afternoon with a win over No. 18 Old Dominion (4-2) by a 2-1 final. The scarlet and gray defense held ODU to only five shots while senior goalkeeper Abby Danson logged three saves.
How it Happened
It was a defensive battle through the scoreless first half, with the Buckeyes only recording five shots and holding the Monarchs to one. Danson notched one save in the half.
The Buckeyes struck first with less than a minute left in the third quarter to go up 1-0. With 7:36 left in the match, Makenna Webster found the back of the cage. ODU answered in the fourth quarter to close the gap to one, but couldn't find the open goal again to leave the score 2-1. The Buckeyes out-shot the Monarchs 12-5 in the match.
How The Goals Were Scored
- Junior Lindsey Roberts came off the bench to put the Buckeyes on the board with 34 seconds left in the third. Roberts now has a career-high two goals this season.
- Makenna Webster struck again for the Buckeyes in the 52nd minute. Webster has scored at least one point in every game this season.
- Midfielder Frederique Zandbergen of ODU scored in the 56th minute, moving the score to 2-1.
Buckeye This and That
- This is the first season since 2006 the Buckeyes have started the year at 6-0 or better. The scarlet and gray went on to win the Big Ten that season and also reached the second round of the NCAA Tournament.
- Besides today, the Buckeyes hold two other ranked wins on the year: the season opener's 6-1 win against No. 20 UAlbany and a 5-0 shutout at No. 10 Syracuse.
