COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State field hockey team recovered from a late deficit to take down No. 5 Virginia, 2-1, Sunday in the Big Ten/ACC Challenge at the Bauer Field Hockey Complex in Piscataway, N.J.

Down 1-0 in the fourth quarter, the Buckeyes (2-2) scored two goals in a minute – both from junior forward Sienna Golden – to take the lead from the Cavaliers (2-1) and come away with their first ranked win of the season and their first win in the series since 2014.

How it Happened

Neither team found the back of the cage in the first half. The Buckeye defensive effort in the opening 30 minutes of the game was highlighted by four second quarter saves from goalkeeper Avery Alleva and the team's defensive penalty corner unit's success against Virginia's six first half corners.
Virginia was first to take the lead in Sunday's game, scoring the first goal of the day in the third quarter at 35:19. Alleva made two saves in the third to hold the Virginia lead to just one goal.
With under 13 minutes to play in the game, Philippa Schipper put a long pass onto the stick of Emily Barker inside the dashed circle. Barker took the ball into the shooting circle and sent a high shot towards the top right corner of the cage. Golden was there to knock the ball out of the air and redirect it into the goal to tie the game at 47:35.
Less than a minute later, Ohio State earned its only penalty corner of the fourth quarter. Schipper was set up for the shot at the top of the circle, and she found Golden on the right post for the redirect into the cage. Just 61 seconds after finding the equalizer, Ohio State had the 2-1 advantage.
The Buckeyes defended two more corners from the Cavaliers and held off nearly six minutes of an extra Virginia field player to come away with the win.

Buckeyes By the Numbers

Ohio State's win over Virginia on Sunday marks the third win for the Buckeyes in the all-time series. The team's last win over Virginia was a 4-3 overtime victory in 2014. The victory is the team's first regulation win over the Cavaliers in series history.
Golden recorded two goals in a game for the first time in her career. She now has four goals in four games for the Buckeyes this season and leads the team in scoring with eight points on the year.
Alleva made a career-high six saves on the day and earned her second career win.
Ohio State faced nine corners on the day and successfully defended each one.
In her return to the lineup, Schipper tallied her first point of the season with the assist on the game-winning goal.

Ohio State is back at Buckeye Varsity Field next weekend, hosting Delaware and Cornell. The Buckeyes play the Blue Hens on Friday, Sept. 11 at 4 p.m. before facing off against the Big Red on Sunday, Sept. 13 at noon. Ohio State will also host a neutral site game between Delaware and Indiana at 1 p.m. Friday.
