Ohio State Claims Win Against UNI, Match Against No. 22 Dayton Ruled No Contest

The Buckeyes wrapped up opening weekend action at the Dayton Flyer Invitational on Saturday.

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State women's volleyball team (2-0) beat Northern Iowa (1-2) in four sets (25-20, 22-25, 26-24, 29-27) in the Dayton Flyer Invitational.
Due to playing conditions and out of an abundance of caution for the health of the student-athletes, the evening match between No. 22 Dayton and RV Ohio State was ruled a no-contest. Two sets were played before the match was ruled a no-contest with each team winning one. The match would have set Dayton's attendance record as there were 4,196 inside Frericks Arena.
VS. NORTHERN IOWA
After surrendering the first point of the match, the Buckeyes did not trail in the remainder of the set – holding off a Panthers push to earn a 25-20 set win. UNI evened the match with a 25-22 win in the second set by scoring the final two points. Ohio State fought off three set points and scored the final five points in a back-and-forth third set to win by a 26-24 margin. The Buckeyes led for the majority of the fourth before a successful challenge gave UNI a 26-25 lead. Ohio State scored four of the final five points to cap the fourth set at 29-27.
Grace Egan (career-high 15), Rylee Rader (14), Eloise Brandewie (12) and Emily Londot (11) all totaled at least 10 kills. Olivia Hasbrook tallied at least 10 digs for the second time this weekend with a career-high 17 digs. Brandewie also tied her career-high seven blocks, including the 100th block of her career. Londot added 11 digs to her 11 kills to tally the Buckeyes' first double-double of the season. Mia Tuman finished with 48 assists.
How it Happened
UNI opened scoring but OSU quickly responded, building an early 7-3 to force a Panthers' timeout. The Buckeyes used a 6-0 run amidst a second UNI timeout to extend their lead to 15-8 with a second ace from Egan. Ohio State called timeout after four-unanswered points from Northern Iowa cut the Buckeyes' lead to 17-15. UNI got within one at 20-19 before a 4-0 OSU run gave the Buckeyes the separation needed for a 25-20 set win, clinched with a kill from Egan.
Ohio State scored first in the second set, but Northern Iowa used a pair of 3-0 runs to build a 12-7 lead. The Buckeyes trailed by as much as 18-9 before Emily Londot ended a 5-0 UNI run. OSU strung together a 5-0 run and a 3-0 run to trim its deficit to 22-19 and force a second UNI timeout. Ohio State got within one at 22-21 and 23-22 on kills from Rader but Northern Iowa evened the match with a 25-22 set win.

The set was tied at points six through 17 as the teams alternated scoring and the traded the lead multiple times. Northern Iowa scored back-to-back points before the teams traded points yet again. Ohio State called timeout trailing 24-21 after two points from UNI. The Buckeyes scored back-to-back points out of the timeout to trim the deficit to 24-23 and force a Panthers timeout. OSU again scored the next two points out of the timeout to take a 25-24 lead and prompt a second UNI timeout. A Panthers error gave the Buckeyes a 26-24 set win and the 2-1 match advantage.
