Pettorini Goes Yard Twice in Loss at Illinois

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – Tyler Pettorini went yard twice as the Ohio State baseball team (23-21, 8-9 Big Ten) fell to Illinois (27-17, 12-6 Big Ten) on Saturday. It is Pettorini's second game this week with two home runs; he also went long twice in Ohio State's win against Akron on Wednesday.

- An RBI groundout from the Illini in the bottom of the first inning game them the early 1-0 lead over the Buckeyes.
- Illinois extended its lead, 4-0, in the bottom of the third after an RBI single and a two-RBI single.
- In the bottom of the fourth, the Illini took a 5-0 lead over the Buckeyes off an RBI single.
- Tyler Pettorini had the first hit of the game for the Buckeyes in the top of the fifth inning, a solo shot over the wall in right field to cut the Illini lead to four, 5-1.
- With one out in the top of the sixth, Henry Kaczmar singled to left field and Hunter Rosson was walked. Pettorini stepped up to the dish next and he came up big once again, blasting his second home run of the day out of the park to leave Ohio State trailing by just one run, 5-4.
- A two-run home run from the Illini in the bottom of the seventh inning extended their lead over the Buckeyes, 7-4.
- In the top of the eighth inning, Joseph Mershon led off with a double to right center and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Okuley then singled through the right side to drive in Mershon and cut the Illinois lead to two, 7-5.
- The Illini hit another home run in the bottom of the eighth, this time a three-run shot, to get ahead of the Buckeyes by five, 10-5.
- The Buckeyes were retired in order in the ninth as Illinois came away with the win to tie the series, 1-1.
- Pettorini and Okuley led Ohio State with two hits each.
- Pettorini had a team-high four RBIs.
- Gavin Bruni (3-3) took the loss. He struck out four and gave up four runs on three hits in 2.2 innings pitched.
- Chase Herrell fanned three and allowed one run on three hits in 2.1 innings of relief.
- The Buckeyes and Illini wrap up their series on Sunday, May 5 at 2:00 p.m. ET.
