
Buckeye Bats Hot in 18-13 Win Against Akron

Game Recap
- The Zips got on the board first with an RBI single and a score on a Buckeye error in the top of the first to take a 2-0 lead.
- The Buckeyes answered in the home half of the first. Henry Kaczmar hit a solo home run to center field. Hunter Rosson then singled and Tyler Pettorini went yard, driving in two runs to put Ohio State in the lead, 3-2. RBI single from Isaac Cadena and Josh Stevenson and a two-RBI double from Ryan Miller gave the Buckeyes a five-run lead over the Zips, 7-2, after one inning of play.
- Three RBI singles and an RBI sacrifice fly from Akron in the top of the second put the Zips within one run of the Buckeyes, 7-6.
- In the bottom of the second, Pettorini went long for the second time, sending one over the wall in right field to put the Buckeyes up by two, 8-6.
- In the bottom of the fourth, Mitchell Okuley led off with a double down the right field line and then swiped third. Cadena was hit by a pitch to reach base and stole second. A double from Trey Lipsey played both Okuley and Cadena to extend the Ohio State lead, 10-6.
- A solo home run from the Zips in the top of the fifth cut the Ohio State lead to three runs, 10-7.
- Joseph Mershon reached base on catcher's interference to lead off the bottom of the sixth frame and he advanced to third base on a single from Stevenson. A sacrifice fly from Miller scored Mershon and put the Buckeyes back ahead by four, 11-7.
- An RBI double and a two-RBI single in the top of the seventh for the Zips left the Buckeyes leading by just one run, 11-10.
- Ohio State, however, quickly countered. In the bottom of the seventh, Rosson was hit by a pitch and Pettorini was walked to put two runners on. Okuley stepped up to the plate next and he doubled to left center to score Rosson. Pettorini scored on a wild pitch and Okuley scored on a sacrifice fly from Cadena. Mershon, who reached base after being hit by a pitch, advanced to second on a balk and to third on a throwing error and then scored on a wild pitch to put Ohio State ahead by five runs, 15-10.
- The Zips cut the Buckeye lead to two, 15-13, in the top of the eighth after plating three runs on three RBI singles.
- In the bottom of the eighth, Kaczmar led off with a double to left center and Rosson drew a walk. A single from Okuley plated both runners. Mershon and Stevenson both walked to load the bases. Miller was then walked, sending Okuley home to put the Buckeyes in the lead, 18-13.
- The Buckeyes held the Zips off in the ninth and came away with the 18-13 win.
- The Buckeyes totaled 16 hits against the Zips.
- Okuley led the team in hits with four. Kaczmar, Pettorini, Mershon and Stevenson each added two hits.
- Miller had a team-high four RBIs. Pettorini and Okuley each batted in three runs.
- Okuley, Cadena, Mershon and Stevenson each had one stolen base.
- Colin Purcell (2-4) earned the win. He fanned six and allowed four runs on three hits in 5.0 innings pitched.
- The Buckeyes head to Illinois for a three-game conference series Friday, May 3-Sunday, May 5.
