Ohio State Wins 19th MIVA Tournament Title

Ohio State advances to play in the 2024 NCAA Tournament starting April 30 at Long Beach State University. The Buckeyes will find out their quarterfinal opponent during the NCAA Tournament selection show at 4 p.m. Sunday. The live stream of the show will air at NCAA.com.
Against the Lions, Ohio State won by scores of 20-25, 25-17, 25-18, 25-16.
Jacob Pasteur lead Ohio State with 18 kills. Shane Wetzel added 13 and Kyle Teune contributed nine. Pasteur and Wetzel were named to the All-MIVA Tournament Team.
Michael Wright was named the MIVA Tournament Most Valuable Player for the second-consecutive year after leading both teams with 45 assists. He also added four kills, two blocks and eight digs in the final.
Tommy Poole led both teams with eight digs in the championship match. Cole Young was a force in the middle with seven blocks to go with six kills and a pair of digs.
Pasteur, fourth nationally in aces per set (.583) had one ace in the match go give him 160 for his career, which is tied for second behind Nicolas Szerszen (2015-18) with 238.
Wetzel needed six kills to reach 600 for his career and now has 607 heading into the NCAA Tournament.
Ohio State has played in 28 MIVA Tournament finals with 19 titles to its credit. The Buckeyes have won the last nine MIVA Tournament titles in which Ohio State has appeared and 12 of the last 13.
The Buckeyes have won the MIVA Tournament title in back-to-back years 10 times all-time after winning the title a year ago.
This will be Ohio State's 23rd NCAA Tournament appearance and second for Kevin Burch, head coach of the Buckeyes.
How it Happened
Set 1
Jacob Pasteur got the Buckeyes out of the blocks with two quick kills for a 2-1 lead. A Shane Wetzel and Cole Young combo block put Ohio State up 4-2. A Kyle Teune kill followed by a Wetzel ace kept the lead at two, 6-4. Lindenwood tied it at 6-all before a Young kill started a back-and-fourth before a Lions 3-1 run put them in the lead at 12-10. Lindenwood led 15-13 at the media timeout and built the lead to 18-15 after the break. Ohio State called its first timeout and then cut it to 21-20 Lindenwood with a 3-0 run. A pair of Teune kills led to the Lions calling the timeout. Lindenwood scored the next two to go up 23-20 before Ohio State's final timeout of the set. The Lions scored the next two points for a 25-20 first-set win.

Set 2
A Pasteur kill and ace, his 160th as a Buckeye, followed by a Wetzel kill put Ohio State in the lead, 7-5. Lindenwood scored the next two for a 7-all tie. A Wetzel kill and Lions attack error gave Ohio State a 9-7 edge. Ohio State used a 3-1 run to take a 12-9 lead. Back-to-back Pasteur kills led to the media timeout with the Buckeyes leading 15-11. Ohio State went up 18-13 on a Wetzel blast, his 600th career kill and sixth of the match. Lindenwood called timeout after a Young/Teune block put the Buckeyes up 20-14. Pasteur, Young and Michael Wright added kills after the break for a 23-15 advantage. Lindenwood called their final timeout of the set after Ohio State's 5-1 run. Young then got the set winning kill to give Ohio State the 25-17 win to tie the match at 1-all. Pasteur led with nine kills after two sets with Wetzel next with six.

Set 3
Ohio State went on a 5-1 run to take a 7-4 lead early in the third. A Lions service error and Wetzel kill made it 9-5 Buckeyes. Lindenwood called timeout after consecutive errors put Ohio State up 11-6. A pair of Pasteur kills and another by Howard made it 17-11 Buckeyes. Ohio State used a 3-1 run to take a 20-14 lead with Howard recording consecutive kills. Teune added a kill before a pair of Lions errors made it 23-16 Buckeyes before a Lindenwood timeout. A Young/Pasteur combo block led to set point for the Buckeyes. Wright got the winning kill (25-18) for a 2-1 lead in the match. Pasteur led both teams with 14 kills with Teune and Wetzel adding each after three sets.

Set 4
With Lindenwood leading 9-8, Ohio State started to pull away after a 7-2 run made it 15-11 at the media timeout. The Lions rallied with a 3-1 run after the break to make it 16-14 Buckeyes. Wetzel added a kill before a Lindenwood error and Ohio State block (Young/Wetzel) to put the Buckeyes up 19-14. The Lions called timeout. Young got a solo block before a Wetzel kill led to another Lindenwood timeout with the Buckeyes leading 21-14. Another Wetzel kill and a Lindenwood service error made it 23-15. Wright and Young combined for a block for a 24-15 lead. The Buckeyes then won it on a Young kill, 25-16.
