Buckeyes Advance in MIVA Tournament With 3-1 Win Over Flyers

COLUMBUS, Ohio – No. 3-seed Ohio State (20-8) advanced with a 3-1 win over No. 6-seed Lewis (15-15) Saturday at the Covelli Center in the quarterfinals of the 2024 Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association Tournament.

Ohio State moves to the semifinal round of the MIVA Tournament where it will face No. 2 seed Loyola Chicago at Ball State Thursday (4 p.m.) in Muncie, Indiana. No. 1 seed Ball State will host the remainder of the MIVA Tournament.Â

In the other MIVA quarterfinals Saturday, Ball State defeated No. 8 Queens (3-0) in Muncie. No. 2 Loyola Chicago downed No. 7 McKendree (3-0) in Chicago and No. 4 Lindenwood took down No. 5 Purdue Fort Wayne (3-0) in St. Charles, Missouri. Â

Ohio State won by scores of 26-24, 25-27, 25-21, 25-20 over the Flyers.

Shane Wetzel (16) and Jacob Pasteur (17) powered the Ohio State offense with a combined 33 kills.

Setter Michael Wright led both teams with 50 assists while Wetzel completed the double-double with a match-leading 13 digs.

Cole Young earned block No. 100 this season in the opening set and finished with a five vs. the Flyers. he has 254 for his career. Â

How it Happened
Â
Set 1
Lewis got out to a 5-3 lead and built a 9-5 advantage. A couple Cole Young kills, a Kyle Teune ace and an error on the Flyers tied it at 11-all after a 4-1 Ohio State run. The Buckeyes took a 13-12 lead on a Michael Wright kill and Lewis attach error. Lewis regained the lead at 15-14 with a 3-1 run. The set went back-and-forth until a Jacob Pasteur kill and Lewis error put the Buckeyes up 22-20. The Flyers called time out and tied it at 22-all with a kill and ace. Ohio State called timeout with the score tied at 23-all. The Flyers went up on an ace after the break before a Justin Howard kill from the middle tied it again at 24-all. Teune put the Buckeyes up 25-24 with a kill. The Buckeyes then won the set on a Wetzel/Young block, 26-24. Young recorded his 100th block of the year in the win.   Â

Set 2
The Flyers again went up early and built a 9-4 lead. The Buckeyes finished off a 4-1 run with a Pasteur kill and Lewis error to make it 10-9 Flyers. Lewis went back up 13-10 before a pair of Pasteur aces capped an Ohio State 3-0 run to tie it at 13-all. Neither team was able to gain separation and with Ohio State leading 17-16 after a Young/Pasteur combo block, Lewis called the first timeout of the set with the Buckeyes on a 3-1 run. Wetzel put Ohio State up 18-16 with a kill after a rally following the break. Lewis then tied it at 18-all. Another Wetzel kill and Lewis attack error made it 20-18 Buckeyes. The Flyers scored the next two before a Howard kill from the middle and a pair of Wright aces made it 23-20 Buckeyes. Lewis called its final timeout of the set and scored the next two before an Ohio State timeout with the Buckeyes leading 23-22. Howard got the kill for a 24-22 lead out of the break. The Flyers then tied it at 24-all before Ohio State called its final timeout. The teams traded points before the Flyers took the set with consecutive points for a 27-25 victory to even the match at 1-all. Pasteur led Ohio State with nine kills after two. Â

The Buckeyes took the early lead at 7-3 after a 3-0 run forcing a Lewis timeout. A Ben Putnam kill, Ohio State block and Lewis attach error made it 11-6 Buckeyes. Putnam added another kill from the left side for a 13-9 lead. A Howard kill and Lewis error put the Buckeyes on top 16-13. Pasteur went cross court for a kill to keep Ohio State up three at 17-14. The Flyers scored the next two before three Wetzel kills made it 20-16 Ohio State. Lewis called timeout before an Ohio State block (Young/Wetzel) upped the lead to 21-16. The Buckeyes called timeout leading 22-20 after a Lewis 4-1 run. Pasteur and Young came out with kills after the break to make it 24-20. Pasteur then got the game winner for the 25-21 win and a 2-1 lead in the match. Pasteur had 13 kills and Wetzel 12 to lead both teams after three.

Pasteur led off the fourth with a kill to help the Buckeyes get out to a 7-3 lead. After kills from Putnam and Howard, Lewis called timeout. Ohio State kept applying pressure in building a 10-5 win after a 3-1 run. Lewis called its final timeout after a Pasteur kill and ace made it 17-11 Buckeyes. Another Pasteur ace after the timeout made it 18-11. Ohio State called timeout with a 19-15 lead. The teams traded points before the Flyers used a 3-1 run to make it 22-19 Buckeyes. A Howard kill and Ohio State block made it 24-19 Ohio State. It was Howard again for the match winner and the 25-20 set victory.
