No. 7 Ohio State Earns Consecutive 3-0 Wins Over Royals

COLUMBUS, Ohio – No. 7 Ohio State (13-3, 7-1) earned a 3-0 win over Queens University of Charlotte (6-11, 2-6) Saturday at the Levine Center in Charlotte, North Carolina, to complete the first Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association series with the Royals.
The Buckeyes won by scores of 25-13, 25-15, 25-23. Ohio State also won the first meeting in the series Friday, 3-0.
Queens is in its first season as a member of the Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association.
Ohio State used a balanced offensive attack with Cole Young leading the way with nine kills. Nine Buckeyes had at least one kill in the win with six recording four or more.
Noah Platfoot got the start at setter and responded with 29 assists to lead both teams. He is now just four assists shy of 2,000 for his career (1,996).
Kyle Teune led the way at the service line with four aces after a three-ace effort Friday against the Royals.
Shane Wetzel paced Ohio State defensively with five digs. He also added seven kills.
How it Happened
Set 1
Cole Young got things underway when he put away an overpass on the opening serve for a 1-0 lead. He added another kill after a Queens error for a 3-0 lead. Young got his third kill before a Kyle Teune ace built the lead to 7-2 Buckeyes. Blasts by Shane Wetzel and Justin Howard before consecutive aces by Noah Platfoot led to a Royals timeout with Ohio State leading 11-4. Queens used a 3-1 run after the break to cut it to 12-7 Ohio State. The Buckeyes then went on a 4-0 run to prompt another Royals timeout with Ohio State leading 16-7. The Buckeyes went up by double figures (18-8) with a Teune kill. Ben Putnam got his first kill of the match for a 22-11 lead. Ohio State then scored three of the next five points for the 25-13 opening set win. Six Buckeyes had kills in the opener with Young leading with four. As a team, Ohio State hit .500 in the win.
Set 2
The teams split the first 10 points of the second before the Buckeyes took a 7-5 lead on a Teune kill. A 3-1 run by the Buckeyes, culminating with a Shane Wetzel ace, put Ohio State up 11-8. A Jacob Pasteur kill and Teune ace made it 13-9 Buckeyes. At the media timeout and after a Wetzel kill, Ohio State led 15-11. Pasteur added a kill and ace after the break to put Ohio State up 18-12. The Royals called timeout but the Buckeyes continued on a 4-1 run for a 19-13 advantage. Queens called another timeout after a Teune ace made it 22-15 Ohio State. Young added consecutive kills to take Ohio State to set point at 24-15. Teune then got the ace for the 25-set win. Young continued to lead both teams with seven kills. Teune had four aces over the first two sets while the Buckeyes upped its hitting percentage by hitting .529 in the second.
Set 3
The Royals started with a 2-0 lead before a 4-0 run put Ohio State in the lead at 4-0. The Buckeyes did not relinquish the lead before Queens tied it at 11-all after a 3-1 run. Kills by Wetzel and Putnam put the Buckeyes back out front at 13-11. Queens scored the next two but Ohio State took a 15-13 lead at the media timeout on a Putnam kill and Royals error. A 3-1 Queens run tied it at 16-all. The Buckeyes responded with a 3-0 run on kills by Wetzel and Teune around a Wetzel, Young combo block for a 19-16 lead. The Royals called timeout before Ohio State took a 21-17 lead on a Young kill and an Ohio State block. After Queens took its final timeout and closed the gap to 22-20 Buckeyes. The teams traded service errors before a Wetzel kill set up match points with Ohio State leading 24-21. The Royals scored the next two points before Putnam got the match winning kill for the 25-23 win.
