No. 7 Ohio State Wins 3-0 Over No. 14 Flyers

COLUMBUS, Ohio – No. 7 Ohio State (14-3, 8-1) won for the fifth time in the last six outings by the score of 3-0 with a sweep of No. 14 Lewis (9-8, 3-4) Thursday at the Covelli Center.
The Buckeyes won by scores of 25-23, 25-17, 25-17.
Shane Wetzel led both teams with 18 kills. He also added four aces in the win. Jacob Pasteur also was deadly from the service line with seven aces.
Michael Wright led both teams with 35 assists. Thomas Poole and Wetzel each had six digs in the win.
For the second time this season, a current Buckeye recorded seven aces in a match.
Redshirt freshman Daniel Hurley had seven aces against Purdue Fort Wayne (W, 3-2) Feb. 20. The total was the most for a Buckeye in a match since Michael Wright had six at Ball State (April 22, 2023).
Pasteur, who needed just three sets to reach seven aces, and Hurley are the first Buckeyes to record seven aces in a match since Christian Franceschi against Ball State (4/8/11). The seven aces are tied third-most at Ohio State in a match.
How it Happened
Set 1
A Shane Wetzel kill followed by a pair of Jacob Pasteur aces gave Ohio State a 7-4 lead after the teams split the first eight points of the set. Lewis called timeout after a Flyers error put the Buckeyes up 8-4. Lewis went on a 7-1 run after the break to take an 11-9 lead. A couple Pasteur kills around a Cole Young blast from the middle tied it at 13-all. The Flyers then used a 3-1 run for a 16-14 lead. Ohio State called a timeout but Lewis kept up the pressure to build a 19-15 advantage. The Buckeyes called their second timeout before Kyle Teune got his first kill before a pair of Pasteur aces made it 19-18 Flyers. Lewis then called its final timeout of the set. Teune then tied it at 19-all with a kill. Wetzel then put one down along the right sideline before another Pasteur ace gave the Buckeyes a 21-19 lead. Lewis then tied it at 22-all on back-to-back kills. The teams traded points before a Pasteur kill led to set point (24-23). Pasteur then got the winning kill for the 25-23 victory. Pasteur and Wetzel each had five kills in the opener. Pasteur also added five aces.
Set 2
Ohio State started the second set with an ace by Wetzel to start a 5-0 run for the Buckeyes. Lewis called timeout but Wetzel added another ace and a kill before an Ohio State block (Young, Teune, Wright) made it 8-0 Buckeyes. Pasteur upped the lead to 10-1 with a kill before the Buckeyes went up 10 (12-2) on a Wetzel kill and Lewis error. The Flyers used a 3-1 run before a Pasteur kill made it 14-5 Buckeyes. Ohio State called timeout after the Flyers cut into the Ohio State lead with a 3-0 run (14-8). The Buckeyes built the lead to 19-11 and a Wetzel rocket down the right sideline made it 20-12 Ohio State. Wetzel remained hot with a cross-courter for a 22-14 lead. Teune came from the back row to make it 23-15. The Flyers called timeout but Wetzel made it 24-15 with a touch kill over the Lewis block. Wetzel then got the set winner (25-17) for a 2-0 Ohio State lead in the match. Wetzel took the match lead in kills with 15 while adding three aces. The Buckeyes hit .652 in the set.
Set 3
Ohio State started hot again in the third while building a 5-2 lead. The Buckeyes maintained a three-point lead before a Wetzel kill made it 12-8 Buckeyes. Justin Howard connected in the middle for a 14-10 Ohio State lead. Lewis called timeout after Ohio State went up 16-11 on a pair of Flyer errors. Pasteur added an ace, his sixth of the match, on the next point to lead to Lewis' final timeout of the set with Ohio State leading 17-11. Pasteur kept it going with another ace out of the timeout before an error made it 18-12 Buckeyes. A block by Young and Michael Wright led to match point (24-16). The Buckeyes then got the match winner on a kill by Pasteur.
