
No. 7 Ohio State Sweeps Royals in First MIVA Meeting

COLUMBUS, Ohio – No. 7 Ohio State (12-3, 6-1) earned a 3-0 win over Queens University of Charlotte (6-10, 2-5) Friday at the Levine Center in the first meeting in the series between the two schools.
The Buckeyes won by scores of 25-16, 25-17 and 25-20.
Queens is in its first season as a member of the Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association.
Jacob Pasteur led both teams with 14 kills, his 12th match of the season with 10 or more kills. Michael Wright directed the Ohio State offense and finished with a match high 32 assists.
Daniel Hurley paced the Buckeyes with nine digs while Kyle Teune (5) and Cole Young (6) led the defense with 11 combined blocks.
How it Happened
Set 1
Queens took a 3-2 lead in the opening set before building the advantage to 6-4. Ohio State tied it at 6-all and took a 10-9 lead on a Jacob Pasteur kill. The Buckeyes then went on a 4-1 run for a 13-10 lead. Ohio State led 15-12 at the media timeout. Pasteur amassed five early kills before the break. Cole Young helped put the Buckeyes up 18-13 while assisting on three-consecutive Ohio State blocks. Queens called timeout before a Daniel Hurley ace and a Royals error made it 20-14 Buckeyes. Ohio State then used a 3-1 run for a 23-15 cushion. The Buckeyes then took the set after a 9-3 run after the media timeout on a Queens error and a set-winning kill by Justin Howard. Ohio State hit .346 in the opener with Pasteur leading the way with five kills. The Royals hit .037.

Set 2
Kills by Young and Pasteur gave Ohio State its first lead of the set at 6-5. Neither team was able to gain separation until Pasteur put away his 10th kill of the match and then added a pair of aces for a 4-1 Ohio State run and a 13-11 lead. A big Ohio State triple block (Hurley, Young, Teune) put the Buckeyes up 15-12 at the media timeout. Teune added a solo block after the break for a 16-12 Ohio State lead. Teune added an ace to force a Queens timeout with the Buckeyes on top 19-14. An error by Queens and another Teune ace made it 21-14. The Royals called their final timeout of the set down seven. Pasteur added a left-handed kill before another Ohio State block made it 23-15 Buckeyes. Ohio State then took the set (25-17) on a Royals service error and another Pasteur kill. With a dozen kills, Pasteur led both teams. Teune and Young each had five blocks after two sets.

Set 3
Ohio State claimed the lead from the outset before the Royals tied the set at 5-all. The Buckeyes then went on a 3-0 run on kills by Howard and Teune before a Queens attack error. The Royals hung around until the Buckeyes started to pull away after a 4-1 run to make it 13-8. Howard sent the set to the media timeout with a kill for an Ohio State 15-10 lead. Both teams were hitting well in the set at the break with the Buckeyes leading .533-.467. Queens called timeout with the Buckeyes leading 18-13. A Hurley kill gave Ohio State a six-point advantage at 20-14. Ben Putnam added a kill before another by Hudson Harris, his first on the year, made it 23-17 Buckeyes. After a Queens service error led to match point, Young got the match-winning kill to give the set to the Buckeyes, 25-20, for the 3-0 win.
