
Perry Makes Run at NCAA Championships

Sophomore making second appearance at national tourney
COLUMBUS, Ohio - Sophomore Luciana Perry of the Ohio State women's team made a run to the quarterfinals of the 2024 NCAA Singles Championship this week in Waco, Texas. Perry earned her second All-America honor when she reached the Round of 16, becoming the first Buckeye to advance to the third round twice, and she was the second Buckeye, and first since Kristy Dascoli in 2001, to reach the quarterfinals.Â
In the first round, Perry, a No. 9-16 seed, rallied to down Daria Smetannikov of Texas A&M, 2-6, 6-4, 6-2. Perry opened the match with a hold and a break but Smetannikov went on a six-game run to take the first set. The Buckeye jumped out to a 4-1 lead in the second set. Smetannikov won the next two games for a 4-3 Perry lead. Perry broke back on the no-ad point, but the Aggie answered with her own no-ad break. Perry recorded another break to capture the set, 6-4. Smetannikov broke on the no-ad point to start the third set before the Buckeye took control, winning the next four games. The Aggie ended the run with a hold for 4-2 and Perry held next to move a game away. In the next game, Perry was down 30-40 but won the final two points for the set and the match.
With a second-round win, Perry clinched her second All-America honor in singles. She again won in three sets,downing Lan Mi of California, 6-3, 2-6,6-4. The players were on serve to open the match before Perry broke for a 4-2 advantage. Each player held the next three games to give the Buckeye the first set, 6-3. In the second set, Mi captured the first two games, with a hold and a break. Perry broke back but the Bear went on a three-game run for a 5-1 advantage. Another break by each player ended with a 6-2 set for Mi. In the third set, Perry won the first two games and Mi took the next two. Perry broke for 3-2 and then won the next two games for a 5-2 lead. The Bear broke and held to draw within 4-5, but Perry closed out the win on her serve.
A straight-set win in the Round of 16 sent Perry into the quarterfinals, as she downed UNC's Carson Tanguilig, 6-2, 6-3. Perry opened the match with a hold and stretched the lead to 5-0. Tanguilig got on the board at 5-1 and then broke for a 5-2 set, but Perry answered with a break on the no-ad point for the first set. The second set started with a hold and break for Perry, before the Tar Heel took the next two games. Perry won the next game at love on her serve and then captured the next two for a 5-2 advantage. Tanguilig served for a 5-3 match and then another love game lifted the Buckeye to the victory.
Perry took on Michigan's Julia Fliegner, the No. 7 seed, in the quarterfinals, with the Wolverine advancing with a 7-6 (4), 6-3 win. It was a rematch of the ITA Midwest Regional Final in October, which Perry won 6-1, 6-1. In the NCAA match, Perry opened with a hold and a break before Fliegner won the next two games. Each player held their next service game before they traded breaks for a 4-4 set. Two more breaks followed and each player then held for a tiebreak. In the tiebreak, the Wolverine jumped out to 4-0 and 6-1 leads. Perry won the next three points but Fliegner closed it out on her serve, 7-4, to take a one-set lead. In the second set, Fliegner won the first two games and Perry was unable to recover the break. Perry broke for 2-1, answered by Fliegner with a break of her own. After a break by Perry for a 3-2 Fliegner lead, the Wolverine won the next two games to move to a 5-2 advantage. Perry took the next game before Fliegner closed it out.
This was the first time the NCAA individual championships have been held in the fall. Perry earned her spot in the 64-player draw after reaching the semifinals of the ITA Midwest Regional. The sophomore was 14-4 in singles this fall, moving her career record to 41-16. Â
