Buckeyes Nearing 30 NCAA Standard Times After Day One at Notre Dame

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State swimming and diving teams combined for 27 NCAA Standard times and six NCAA Zones qualifying scores on the first day of the Tim Welsh Classic on Friday. The No. 6 women lead the four-team women's field with 813 points and the No. 14 men trail the No. 12 Fighting Irish, 814-781.
The Buckeyes opened the day with a victory in the 200 free relay, with the team of Teresa Ivan, Katherine Zenick, Nyah Funderburke and Amy Fulmer placing first with an automatic NCAA qualifying time of 1:27.65.
In the women's 500 free, Maya Geringer (4:45.85), Gwen Woodbury (4:46.60) and Lucy Malys (4:47.14) placed 1-2-3. All three of their times are NCAA B cuts.
In the men's 500 free, Ohio State took the top six spots. Charlie Clark was the winner with an NCAA B cut time of 4:18.54. Alex Axon (4:19.07) and Tristan Jankovics (4:21.77) finished second and third, respectively, and both recorded NCAA B standard times. Alex Metzler (4:22.18), Sam Campbell (4:24.10) and Mason Edmund (4:28.48) took fourth, fifth and sixth place.
Josephine Panitz was the winner of the 200 IM, touching the wall in an NCAA B standard time of 1:57.74.
The Buckeyes swept the top three spots in the 50 free. Teresa Ivan placed first with a time of 22.24, Zenick was second with a time of 22.29 and Fulmer was third with a time of 22.30. All three times are NCAA B standard times.
Ruslan Gaziev and Evan Fentress finished second and third in the 50 free. Gaziev finished in 20.05 and Fentress turned in a time of 20.17.
The relay team of Tristan Harrison, Hannah Bach, Zenick and Fulmer finished in an automatic NCAA qualifying time of 3:30.38 to place first. Funderburke, Panitz, Moran Kraus and Ivan finished second with a provisional time of 3:32.33.
Om the boards, Janie Boyle placed second in the 3-meter dive with an NCAA Zones qualifying score of 332.75 and Clayton Chaplin placed third on the 1-meter with an NCAA Zones qualifying score of 364.50.
The Buckeyes opened the evening session with another relay victory, with the team of Funderburke, Bach, Zenick and Ivan winning the 200 medley relay with an NCAA provisional time of 1:36.46. The second-place team of Harrison, Panitz, Catherine Russo and Fulmer turned in an NCAA provisional time of 1:36.96.
Kraus (52.14) and Zenick (53.01) finished second and third, respectively, in the 100 fly, each turning in NCAA B standard times. Evan Fentress also recorded an NCAA B cut, finishing in 47.05 to place sixth on the men's side.
The Buckeyes took the top seven spots in the women's 400 IM, with Kyra Sommerstad (4:11.00), Mia Rankin (4:12.06) and Hall (4:13.11) placing first, second and third with NCAA B standard times. Malys (4:13.36), Jessica Eden (4:14.94) and Krista Marlin (4:14.45), who finished fourth, fifth and sixh, also recorded NCAA B cuts. Reese Dehen finished seventh for the Buckeyes with a time of 4:20.88.
Ohio State also dominated the men's 400 IM, taking the top four spots. Metzler was the winner, with an NCAA B cut time of 3:49.43. Will Bansberg, who placed second, also recorded an NCAA B cut, turning in a time of 3:49.44. Billy Regan (3:51.28) and Campbell (3:53.40) finished third and fourth, respectively.
Liberty Gilbert was the winner of the women's 200 free with a time of 1:48.73. Axon (1:35.94) and Shaw Satterfield (1:36.89) finished 1-2 in the mens's 200 free.
Bach (59.00) and Dehen (1:00.99) finished first and second in the 100 breast, both recording NCAA B standard times and Fulmer (51.76) and Harrison (52.34) placed first and second in the 100 back, each with NCAA B cuts.
Ohio State wrapped up the evening session with two relay wins in the 800 free relay. Zenick, Marlin, Hall and Fulmer were the winners on the women's side with a time of 7:06.72. On the men's side, the team of Jankovics, Gaziev, Axon and Satterfield placed first with a time of 6:22.15.
