1/19/2024 8:48:00 PM | Men's Volleyball
Coach Kevin Burch's Buckeyes, which joined UCLA at the NCAA championships last season, played an absolutely terrific match. After the first set went to UCLA, Ohio State was in the lead in the second set as late as 19-16, but the Bruins rallied to win for a two-set lead.
The Buckeyes just got better from that point on. Once the team came back to tie the third set at 7-all, Ohio State did not trail in a game the rest of the way, playing 105 points across three games without trailing.
For the match, Ohio State hit .305 and had a .483 kill percentage. UCLA hit .366 and had a .500 kill percentage.
Individually, Michael Wright had 46 assists and Jacob Pasteur tied his season-high with 23 kills. Shane Wetzel joined Pasteur in double figures with 13 kills, while Ben Putnam and Cole Young had eight apiece. Justin Howard had four kills along with four block assists. Wright and Young had six and five block assists, respectively.
This was Ohio State's second consecutive five-set match (a 3-2 win over UC San Diego last Saturday). UCLA played its first five-set match in its last 19 matches (a 3-2 win over Penn State on March 9, 2023).

Here's how the win happened, set-by-set:
Set 1
UCLA bolted to a 4-1 lead early, but Ohio State rebounded to trail by one at 5-4 on block assists from Shane Wetzel and Justin Howard and again at 6-5 on a kill by Wetzel. The Bruins then extended the lead to four points at 10-6 and again at 12-8. UCLA attack and service errors enabled the Buckeyes to get to within 12-10. The Bruins held at least a two-point lead for the next 12 points before a four-point run extended an 18-16 lead to 22-16. A Guy Genis kill at 24-19 gave the first set to UCLA. The Bruins led, 12-6, in kills and outhit the Buckeyes, .391 to .000.
Set 2
UCLA trailed virtually the entire set until scoring nine of the final 13 points to claim a 25-23 set victory and go up 2-0 for the match. The Bruins hit .519 for the set and led in kills, 17-14, while Ohio State came back to hit .281. The Buckeyes jumped out to a 4-0 lead on kills by Cole Young and Jacob Pasteur and a Young service ace. UCLA fought back to trail by one three times at 5-4, 7-6 and 8-7, but Ohio State scored six of the next seven points to go up 14-8 and force a UCLA timeout. Pasteur had three kills in the run and Ben Putnam and Michael Wright each had one. UCLA then scored 10 of the next 15 points to climb to within one, 19-18, prompting a second timeout of the set by the Buckeyes. The set was tied for the first time at 19-all and then it remained tied at 20-20, 21-21, 22-22 and 23-23 before the Bruins scored the final two points of the set. Pasteur led the Buckeyes with seven kills.
Set 3
Buckeyes! The teams traded points throughout the start of the set with four ties early, including at 7-all. A 3-0 Buckeye run ensued, giving Ohio State a 10-7 lead behind a UCLA service error, a Pasteur kill and a service ace from Wright. Ohio State held at least a two-point lead moving forward behind key efforts: a combined block assist from Wright, Young and Putnam made it 15-12; a Young kill made it 16-13; and a Pasteur kill made the score 17-14. The Buckeyes then called timeout, leading 18-16. It helped! Four consecutive Buckeye points followed for a 22-16 lead. The team then closed out the set, 25-18, with a Wetzel kill sandwiched around two UCLA service aces. Ohio State hit .450 for the set and had a .600 kill percentage.

Set 4
Wow! What a set … won by the Buckeyes, 25-23. The fourth set opened with 21 ties or lead changes in the first 21 points, and the Buckeyes didn't trail once. The first lead of more than a point in the set came at 12-10, Ohio State, on a block assist by Wright and Young. Ohio State held the lead through the next six points with Wetzel and Pasteur kills giving their team 14-12 and 15-13 leads, respectively. After a media timeout, Ohio State went up by three, 18-15, on a block assist by Wetzel and Young, forcing a UCLA timeout. UCLA scored consecutive points for the first time in the set to get to within 18-17. Ohio State scored its next four points on kills to lead, 22-19, and then closed out the set on a Justin Howard kill, a Wetzel kill and a UCLA service error. Both teams were on: Ohio State hit .524 with a .458 kill percentage; UCLA hit .667 with a .583 kill percentage.
Set 5
The Buckeyes kept the momentum in this final set, jumping out to a 4-0 lead, increasing it to 10-4 and ultimately holding on for a thrilling, 15-13 fifth-set victory and the match win. After the early lead, UCLA fought back to within 6-3 and 7-4, but Ohio State extended and went up 10-4 on a Pasteur kill. Moments later, another Pasteur kill stopped a mini Bruin run and kept the Buckeyes in the lead at 11-9. Leading 13-12, Ohio State got a kill by Howard to get to match point. UCLA held, though, as Cooper Robinson's kill made it 14-13. After an Ohio State timeout, Pasteur smashed his 23rd kill of the game to give the Buckeyes the set and the victory.
